Did anyone else see the final bid prices on the recent auction of a 629 classic DX 5" and 29 classic DX 5" ?

The 29 classic DX went for $3080
The 629 classic DX went for $2500

...on the other hand, 5" Classic DXs are quite scarce AND excellent revolvers in every respect. I have been expecting them to go up.

Some people have more money than sense.
If Im wrong, I need to start listing some of my 90's guns.

You might be right and most including me would agree with you.But we also could all be wrong and our Smith's are heading into Colt pricing territory.

All the DX's are limited in numbers, didn't think THAT LIMITED!$!

I'd love to have a 629 and/or 29DX for my collection. But, not for that kind of money.

I think just about any pre-ILS kept in good condition will keep, and steadily gain "value" over time.

I've been watching the 629 DX's for a while and they have hovered right above $1000 for a nice one. I'm not sure if these latest auctions are anomaly's or indicate a stronger market, but it sure seems like prices are going up.

In terms of production numbers, 29 and 629 Classics are one thing but Classic DXs are quite another. Additionally, five-inch 629 Classic DXs were only made for one year and I'll wager that the 29 DXs were as well and probably in even smaller quantities. But today's prices give me the warm fuzzies as I paid $800 for my like-new five-inch 629 Classic DX just a few years ago. Now in fairness, mine didn't come with any of the DX extras - sight package, extra stocks and test target - but I was able to buy everything but the test target from S&W after the fact.

I just picked up a 8-3/8" 29 DX LNIB this past Sunday. All the paperwork, box, target, cleaning kit, grips, and sights for 900. I have been looking for a couple years, and it was a little more than I wanted to pay, but they don't come up very often and this was in great shape. The seller never fired it, but wasn't original owner, so couln't sell as unfired. It has been handled and has a slight trun line, but I was happy get it. I had an opportunity to buy a 29 classic 5" for $800 local that was in good shape, but passed a few months back, I prefer the DX, but still wonder about that 5"...

Congrats on finding a DX for under a $1000.

I've purchased almost exclusively what I'd call 'commodity junk' since I started buying handguns, and have been very happy with every piece of non-investment plastic I've purchased. Nothing was purchased for any reason other than to shoot what I wanted to shoot.

Revolvers in general, and Smith revolvers in particular, and pre-junk revolvers that will never be made again specifically--is a totally new game for me and clearly nothing like any other handgun market. What I just paid for my 'grail gun' would buy 4 or 5 of my usual auto pistols. An amount of money that is ridiculous and absurd by any measure. It was what I felt I had to pay to get a gun that won't ever be made again, and will only be available at an even higher price--outside of a lucky find at a show or pawn shop or some other venue I'm not going to get around to.

Honestly, there are just some things I don't see often, and when I do, I'm willing to go nuts to get them. A 629-4 5" Classic, for example, is not something I see showing up on radar right now. And I'd probably pay the asking price to get one. On the one hand, paying anything at all for a revolver seems silly--on the other hand, when I see what I like, it seems to cost a lot of money and I understand exactly why. It makes no sense from a 'utility' perspective.

At the moment I've refocused--I want my house paid off and I want to sit back on the deck and suck back a vodka on the rocks, reflect on all I've not really accomplished in life, and maybe visit the range once a week. To do that, I can't pay thousands for rare toys. Life sucks that way.

While it didn't go for a price to match the 2 in the OP, this auction here for an unfired 6 1/2" 629-3 DX ended up at a healthy $1625. The person putting the auction up did it right, with plenty of good pics and a really nice pistol with all the goodies, including target. I'm sure someone is very happy with their new purchase this evening.

Quite often I see a thread on here that makes me want the model in that particular thread, even if I had no desire for it before.
This thread and another put the idea in my head that I needed a DX. Well, I didnt find one that I was willing to fork over the cash for, but I did come across a 29 Magna Classic, which according to SCSW has all of the same features and they did have to meet the same accuracy standards. This one is described as 98% but it is only the gun. No box, target or sights. I struck a deal for $775 shipped. Thank you Smith-wessonforum for making me part with money that I cant afford to part with. As a result, I will have a 60-9 for sale to help recoup some of the money.

Good investments? YES! I have both DX Classics the M 29 and the M 629. I am going to have to start treating them with more reverence. I have been shooting them, reloading my cast bullets and otherwise tuning some. Unfortunately, both were purchases from the usual desperate LV gambler and I didn't get anything but the handguns. Because I like the barrel length and the full lug design so much, I have even picked up a couple of 5" Classic barrels from de-mill parts offered on fleabay. Many times the seller has no idea of what they actually have. ............
