What kind of grouping are those that have Model 17's are you'll getting?

Sir,

The last time I tested mine from a rest, I was able to get 1-1/2" groups at 25 yds. This was using Federal Value Pack bulk ammo; maybe higher end stuff would group better. I hope so; I wasn't real impressed with 1-1/2", though other forum members seemed to think it was fine.

Regards,
Andy

I think 1 1/2" groups at 25 yards "with Fed bulk pack ammo" to be quite excellent. That same gun with match ammo, such as Ely or Aguila Pistol Match, or CCI Match would be even tighter. I consider my 617-6 an "X-Ring" gun.

My daughter shoots pop cans all day long 25-50 yards with my 17. Federal bulk pack ammo is primarily what she shoots and she has very few misses.
With premium target ammo, she never misses.

I've never put it in a rest to check groups on a target

1-1/2" at 25-yards from a benchrest is normal, as far as I am concerned. That is about as good as most people can see-hold-and-squeeze. The guns likely will do better because most of us have fired the occasional 1-inch group and sometimes a bit better.

I've read about Ransom rest testing K22s, but never done it myself. The testers are always target shooters and they were looking for something better than 10-ring accuracy (~3.4 inches at 50-yards).

My opinion is that they are minute-of-squirrel accurate at tall tree range (20-yards) and better than 10-ring accurate at 50-yards.

I don't have any experience with the later versions. The last one I bought was a 17-5, which has a rather heavy barrel and rib. It shot right along with all the others. My best shooter is a 4-screw gun that always seems to shoot about 1/4" better than anything else. Possibly the trigger... ?

I don't think most people can shoot up to the accuracy potential of a good K22 and I've never seen a bad one (that didn't have a ringed barrel). I know I can't. :)

The best group I ever got was with Federal Classic at 3/4" at 25 yards . I have a 17-3 with an 8 3/8" barrel scoped with a older Tasco world class 1.25x4 , which I use for head shooting squirrels.

I'd be very happy with consistent 5of6 1.5" with open sights, and less than 1" with a scope. Those 17's are Classy shooters and I'd like one for a squirrel gun!

I got spoiled by watching an older gentleman(probably mid-70s, thick glasses, and on oxygen) at the range shoot sub-inch & a half groups at 50 yds. with his older model 17(I think it was a late 50s era specimen, if I remember correctly.).

Model 17-6

Both excellent shooters.

1' to 1 1/2" about normal for the bulk pack ammo, my 8 3/8" will do 3/4" with match ammo if I can hold up my end of the bargain..

I agree: 1.5" at 25 is nothing to sneeze at.

I haven't bench-tested my 17-3 since my silhouette days 30 years ago, but IIRC, I could get sub 1" 5-shot groups from Federal Super Silhouette at 25 meters, hands down the most accurate .22 LR ammo I've ever shot. From the bench, my scoped Contender could put 5 in 1/2" at 50 meters (I use meters since that's how silhouette is shot.).

Back in they day, I could ring a rifle silhouette ram at 100 meters standing about 30% of the time with the 17-3.

Ah, those were the days!

One post mentions 1.5" groups @ 50 yds fired by an older gentleman. When revolvers were the norm for bullseye, Colt and S&W were at each other's throats for the edge. This sort of accuracy was expected and needed to be competitive. I had a Colt Police Positive target and Officer's Model Target, both pre-war, that would certainly shoot to this level. I'd expect a S&W from the same era to shoot to that level.
