Can someone recommend closed-back wood grips for 617-6 (K-frame)? Wood color and type doesn't matter. I stumbled across Nill grips, but they are too expensive. No luck elsewhere. I am trying to closely approximate the stock rubberized grips on the 617. Thanks in advance.

Im guessing you are referring to K round butt to square butt conversion grips for a 617-2 or higher revision ?
Here is a comparison of the two frame styles with target grips:

If so there are a few companies depending on what style you prefer,
We have a couple of members like "Culina" and "Keith Brown" that make very fancy styles for around $195 IIRC,
Ahrends, Altamont, Eagle and Herrets may offer styles for closer to $100,
S&W offers some on their website that are made by an aftermarket co might be Ahrends , its been a while so cant recall all details.

Hi, N.C. Ordnance Inc. in Wilson, N.C. gungrips.com that's where I got some the grips cover the back and front and will fit square butt or round butt. Rosewood or Tigerwood combat grips They will run you around $60.00 plus shipping

Ordnance inc is a trip.... $850 for some Siberian Mammoth K or N grips anyone?

They did have some m1917 plain walnut for $95 that I've been looking for, but hopefully I can find some cheaper.

Check out Ahrends Grips. Nice web site, nice prices.
I'm 110 % satisfied with all the ones Kim has made for me. That's a set on my avatars model 58. Love them ! Real wood available (I hate laminate aka plwood )

If you can wait Spegel full size straight grips with the round to square butt conversion.

Herrett Jordan Troopers or their Shooting Masters come right to mind. Herrett's routine for 50 plus years has been you send them a drawing of your hand and they tweak the basic shape to fit you better. They used to optionally carve stocks out of a piece of wood you mailed them and probably still do. That way you could carouse hardwood specialty stores for exceptional grain.

I prefer to spend frugally on stocks. They are frequently sold used in the classified ads here and on other gun websites, on Gone Broker, and eBay. Also after finding all the guns at a gun show or gun store either over priced or not what I want wood grips from the junk boxes make good souvenirs. I only want J frames' trigger reach extended so I reject most of the used stocks I find because they cover the back strap. They might be as much as three quarters of the sets I find so it should be easy pickings for you.

I too am frugal. I have made my own, but without duplicating machines, that iss a chore.

Check CDNN with Google. ,they buy lots of overstock stuff. I have bought wood Herretts for under $20 for J frames and 1911s.

Check out a dealer called "8guns" over on Ebay. I've bought two pairs of really nice fitting closed back conversion grips from him in the last couple of months. Nicely grained wood. Clean checkering. Laser etched S&W logo, $45 delivered from Thailand in about 2 weeks. I've got one pair on my 6" 617 myself. Love em!

The square-butt grips on the S&W site FIT the 617, but...there is a gap where the rounded frame turns in. Looks a bit "unfinished".
I've ordered the Ahrends grips, which should avoid this problem.
