Seeking comments on a S&W Model 629-6 44Mag
Mountain Gun Outfitter Series Stainless Steel
Revolver.

Has the "Lock", S&W Black Rubber Grips,
4" tapered barrel, and Laser engraved Elk Rack
on right side plate.

This is new in the blue plastic box. Pictures show
Julin Date appears to be 9036. Also S&W brown paper
wrap, keys, and paperwork. Appears to be just
factory fired.
I'm hoping cylinder and bore are correct diameters,
.429.

What something like this worth?
I will being viewing it tomorrow.

Thank you in advance for your replies.

It's worth what you'll pay for it and the seller agrees to. I have the blued version and love it. It's a little feisty with full power factory loads but I reload a moderate magnum load and shoot the heck out of it with .44 Specials. I wouldn't pass it up, even though some complain about the recoil, and of course the lock.

I recently bought one with the 6 inch barrel. Lock does not bother me at all. The factory grips were wood which punished my hand, so I put on a set of Hohue finger groove fancy wood grips and a Hi-Viz green front sight. Much better now.

Ship date is......

February 5, 2009.

To value, start at the price of a similar new -6 and deduct 10% for being used. Go from there with the goal being to pay as little as possible. The engraving, in my view, adds no value. In fact, I would expect to pay LESS for a MG engraved in such a fashion.

Mountain guns carry a premium over standard models because they aren't made any more. The -6 models is where the premium starts to drop off. The gun you described would likely fetch $800 on gbroker. I dont know what the seller has into it, but less tha 700 would be a fair price. I'd would off something like $625 (on the low side of its value) cash out the door and see what he comes back with.

I agree with Kernel's value assessment.

Ill mention here that when people ask value questions, responding by saying its worth what someone is will to pay and what some is will sell for isn't helpful. They are looking for market values. Obviously it will clear at an agreed price. This seems to be happening more frequently and it's kind of a wise response not in the spirit of the forum. That's just my opinion though.

Check the auction sites for going prices. I paid $730 for a 29-8 MG about 5 years ago.

The tapered barrel and short lug reduces the weight to about 42 oz. You'll feel the recoil, but no bones will be broken in your hand. I've fired as many as 50 rounds in a session before calling it quits for the day. No ice packs were used in the recovery ;)

This deserves repeating! Well said.

A buddy of mine has this same gun. He has arthritic hands and recoil is painful for him. We worked up a mild load and he loves it. I fired it at a 12" plate offhand at 150 yards and never missed. It is a real shooter. He replaced the rubber grips with a set from Ahrend's.

He traded for his bit I believe it was valued at or near $800.00.

Bought a similar 629 last year for $700.00. My 629 was "used" very little. Nice pistol, mine is a keeper.

29-8 Mountain Gun

I bought one (Model 29-8, not 629) about ten years ago for $625 and sold it to a friend about three years ago for $800. It probably had 10 to 15 rounds through it.

I have almost always had to open the cylinder throats to match the groove diameter of the barrel on a newly acquired revolver, be it smith or a ruger . Can you push your bullet through the cylinder with just a little finger pressure ? Another area that I have had problems with has been the barrel to frame fit . When they tighten the barrel to the frame it usually " squashes " the inside of the barrel a few thousandths . A lot of leading problems actually are from this area and not many people recognize that as the problem area . Tool marks on the inside of the barrel , the stamping on the side of a barrel (it's done with a high pressure roll press) that can slightly flatten a barrel causing a tight spot . These are possible areas of leading .
I will recommend Veral Smiths book , " jacketed performance with cast bullets ' . It can be found at his website , " LBT Molds " for about $15-20 . Veral is a huge wealth of information . He describe in detail problem areas and how to fix it .

Here is the Outfitter with Circa 1996 S&W Hand Ejector Model
625-6 45 Long Colt Mountain Gun Stainless Steel Revolver.
Firing Pin on hammer, 4"tapered barrel, "No Lock", Houge/S&W
Medallion Black Rubber Grips (I got for $25). Got rid of the
worthless wood combat grips.

I noticed the 44Mag is heavier then the 45LC.

S&W 629-6 MG OS

Cleaning out the fouling from the factory
test firing.

Have not decided if I'm going to shoot it just
yet.

Do you really want to keep it pretty for someone else down the line, or do you want to shoot? C'mon, you know you want to shoot it :D

Shoot it! It's a newer model gun, not a museum piece. I love the older S&W's and respect and value high quality pieces but to put a newer model in the dark recesses of gun safe seems like a contradiction IMO. Why buy what you want to not shoot it? :)

Then are we talking California prices or Utah prices, the price as quoted in the Blue Book, a pawn shop, a little old lady, some here revel in swindling, or the low ball prices some dream about? I know what I had to pay for mine, it was unique to my situation and to throw out some preconceived price and expect it to somehow be binding to buyer or seller seems foolhardy, but that's just my opinion.

Well, he is clearly in South Dakota so I'd assume non Cali related prices there. Gbroker gets them done regularly in the $800 range which is a pretty liquid market place. This can be seen using their advance search option and checking completed auctions. Mine got done a little under $800. I mentioned $700 to $800 is fair based on what Im seeing which is what op was asking. That seems to in line with what others have mentioned, so I think it's quite possible to get conensus on value despite outliers.

If you really feel you don't have any insight because you dont know what an old lady, a pawn shop, the blue book, and california variations of all the above mark them at, so be it. He asked for a cost range, not how it handles different power factors or how a transaction price is achieved.

S&W 629-6 44mag MG Outfitter

Here is another picture of the factory fired 2009 S&W
Hand Ejector Model 629-6 44Mag Mountain Gun Outfitter
Series Stainless Steel Revolver. Laser engraved Elk Rack,
firing pin mounted in frame, 4"tapered barrel, "Lock",
S&W Black Rubber Grips.

I like the fact that it has the firing pin mounted internal
in the frame. As a Reloader, I appreciate that because
for high pressure cartridges like the 44Magnum, it supports
that primer better, firing pin is smaller, hole diameter stays
consistent, decreasing the chance of primer metal flowing
into the firing pin hole. This also eliminates drag on the
recoil shield and jams.
