I am new here and have had Smith handguns for most of my life, but have never considered myself a collector. That said, I have come across something I cannot find much information on. It is a matched set of two revolvers, a 617 and a 686 with matching serial numbers, in boxes and unfired. They are slightly engraved and are designated as a set of 1 of 200 from 1993.

Are these rare? Are they collectable and worth owning? Thank you in advance for any information.

Many groups outside of Smith and Wesson put together sets for various reasons. Not all commemorates came direct from the factory

If you supple the six digit product codes off of the two factory boxes it would give us something to research.

Also sooner or later someone will come along asking for pictures. We love pictures, especially of unusual Smith and Wessons. So get your camera out and be ready :)

Collectible? Everything is collectible when it gets old enough

Worth owning? Only you can answer that.

I have lots of unusual Smith and Wessons that many folks do not consider worth owning, but I do

Serial #s should be unique...................is there a letter prefix?

Page 377 of the SCS&W 3rd.... Matched set of 586 revolver, Model 1500 Deluxe Rifle, and a Shooter Knife..... all with same serial #.
200 sets made msrp $2250

Some how I got one of the 6" 586s....with an NPxxxxx prefix

The 617 product code is 100569. The 686 code is 104233. They have matching serial numbers with prefixes of ZZK for the 617 and ZZL for the 686.

The side plates have a "target" engraved on them and are designated 1 of 200 sets.

The right side of each barrel is engraved "1993 matched set" in between scroll work.

Each box is labeled "**special**" under the features heading.

They are identical 6 inch underlug barrels and finger groove goncalo alves grips.

Perfect.

The SPECIAL under features tells us the embellishments were done at the factory

The product codes are where we get a little more informaion, it turns out these sets were a Distributor Exclusive that was contracted by Zanders in 1992.

Zanders is also the reason for the ZZ? prefixes.

As you can guess, since these were ZZK and ZZL, there were 10 previous Zanders Exclusives produced by Smith and Wesson

Don't you imagine the ZZK is for the K frame 617, while the ZZL if for the L frame 686, as opposed it being 10 prior exclusives?

I've been unable to post any photos or I certainly would. I have shared all the details I have.

I knew the series was commissioned by Zanders and also most of the other details you folks recited for me.

The mystery for me was what they are worth or sell for, as I have not been able to find a single online listing or completed sale.

Thanks for the effort and interest but I'm right where I started.

:)

Since there are zero pictures on this thread, I’ll post one of my home made almost matched set, 586 and 17
