I spotted a pre lock 586 w/ rubber grip, very minor blue wear on end of barrel and leading edge of cylinder. No mention of original box and asking price of $700. Assuming it checks out to be mechanically sound, what would be a fair price?

In my neck of the woods, anything under $700.00.

What Dash is it ? No Dash would be a fair price in excellent condition. Need a little more info on the gun .. Blueing lost real bad ? Pictures and Dash # would help.

It's a dash 3. Blue looks very good except for very slight wear on the very end of muzzle. I don't think it'll be on the shelf long. I don't see many of these for sale.

I'd offer less but bring the $700 just in case. What barrel length?

Sorry, 4" barrel. Gotta pay FFL fee also. Just asked seller, turns out it's a dash three. He didn't know until I asked him to look or advertise as 586-3. Asked about end shake and forcing cone and he didn't know what I was talking about.

It is hard sometimes to pony up on these guns because we rember when the were so inexpensive. Many of us recall when these could be had for 400-500 bucks. Even though I have one 700 sounds a bit high. I don’t know that I would buy at 700.....offer up 600 then settle on 650 and you won’t feel bad about the deal. Everyone should have a 586 in their safe.

As stated, prices used to be considerably less. I wouldn’t sell my -1 for $700 and only paid $150 (grips included) for this one.
ETA:
I bought mine used (no box, etc) and have had numerous opportunities to sell. Never talked price as it's not for sale. Yes, it shoots that good.

I recently bought a 586-4 for $629 on Gunbroker but the shipping and transfer brought it up to $689. I still thought it was not too bad as it came with a nice set of combat grips which I've seen sell for a few hundred bucks on their own.

Do you think its a fair price?
Do you like the gun?
Are you willing walk away over $50?

I'd say, if you like it buy it. :D

I think the price is too high for the condition of the gun after seeing more pictures. I'm looking at a 686-4 2.5" now.

It will never be cheaper. The price will only go up and up. I bought this one years ago on a drop-in visit to my local gun store. Glad I did, few have been made like this. So this one is off the market place permanently.

S&W Model 586-7 4” Blue (7 shot) .357 Mag - Lock removed - $599.95

I've noticed you keep asking value questions on firearms I assume you are contemplating purchasing. Just keep asking questions about value, and keep track of what you see guns actually selling for (NOT what they are listed at). You'll be an aficionado in no time.

As far as Smith's never being cheaper than they are now, don't panic, I don't think that's true. As soon as the the baby boomers and generation X die off, the majority of the generations left will be fiddling with the plastic guns while guys like me are going to be swimming in heirlooms that their kids traded me for glocks. No offense intended to the blue haired ladies and gents of course, we all have to go sometime.

Just me but I'd try to work a deal for a shooter grade 4" 586...... Condition is everything..... I've got two nice 4" 586s in the safe that are too nice for field use........I would find a home for a shooter grade gun I could take afield.

Revolvers don't move fast around here........try the waters.... offer $600

Got a unfired 4'' 586-4 for $900 incl shipping fees etc. I love it and I find it absolutely precious. I think the dash 4 is the pinnacle. If you can grab a dash 3 in great little fired condition (even timing on all chambers, no endshake etc)...grab it and run. Don't sweat a few Jacksons more/less.
