New 686+ Deluxe

Howdy,

Been awhile since I've posted [emoji3]. I just picked up a 686+ "Deluxe" this week. I really like the revolver, but I hate these grips. I consider them proof that there are aliens among us, since they don't seem designed for human hands [emoji12]. They drew blood from my thumb today, where they had put a blister a few days ago. Anyway, I've ordered some Hogue Bantams which I hope will fix that problem.

So far accuracy has been good with a variety of .357 and 38 special loads. Double action pull measures 10 lbs 11 Oz, single action just under 4 lbs.

Nice revolver! hope you find some comfortable grips. I tried a pretty pair of Hogue Batam wood grips that cut into my thumb then a pair of rubber Batams too small .Sold both and put he OE rubber grips back on, just right!

I can't get my hand as high as I'd like, for one thing. Also that part that sticks up to hump is too thick and too squared off. That is the part that chewed a hole in my thumb.

I own this same revolver but have changed sights and grips over the years. What I found worked best for me was old school magna's with a Tyler-T grip adapter. It's the one pictured on my avatar.

Also I believe when they were first released these were a TALO edition revolver. They were suppose to be a limited edition but then became standard production. It was the only 686+ in a 3" offering that was part of two other Deluxe models in 5" and 7", as the factory offerings were in 2.5", 4" and 6". Now the only thing making it deluxe is the grip.

The original 686+ 3", 5" & 7" barrel .357s that were distributed by TALO, as the 3-5-7 Series, all had unfluted cylinders & were first introduced in 2010. I got my 5" in the Spring of 2012.

Once S&W dropped their association with TALO, S&W keep the revolvers, & the 3-5-7 series, in the line-up as they are still today, only removing the reference to TALO.

They also had wood grips (black/silver) that looked better than they felt too, which everyone changed out right away. I always thought they reminded me of a dark watermelon seed. :p

As far as I know, the Deluxe Series came later. The two currently offered 686 Deluxe models are 3" & 6" barrels with fluted cylinders.

Just a quick follow up to say that the Hogue Bantam grips work very well. They fit my hands and it's now enjoyable to shoot magnum loads through this revolver.

Try the Ahrends tacticals. Great fit and finish. Several kinds of wood offered over the years.

BTW, I thought those fancy deluxe grips on the 686-6 Plus were really cool until I bought the gun and tried shooting it with those grips. The finger grooves don't match my medium to large hands at all. I imagine they would fit somebody with big hands and thick fingers, but certainly they are not for more average hands. The original grips are in the box.
 
Did you get the rubber ones or one of the woods? I have the Bantams in wood on my 3" 629 and the rubber ones on my L frame 69. I'll be putting the wood on the 69 too eventually. I like the Bantams grips.

I only have anecdotal evidence but supposedly Talo refuses any from SW that have the typical mass production issues i.e. No canted barrels, etc

My Talo 686+ is the finest I've ever owned or shot.
