New 686+ Deluxe

That is a handsome revolver. I am sorry the grips don't work for you. Getting all these things sorted out is part of the fun for me.

I recently got the TALO version with the non-fluted cylinder. I replaced the wood grips with the Hogue Bantam, which works well for me shooting magnum loads. I wish Hogue would leave off the last finger protrusion. I only really want the upper finger groove. Anyhow, I think you will be happy with the Bantam grip.
I swapped the main and rebound springs for Wolff replacements. DA pull is 8 pounds and SA pull is 3 pounds. Perfect!

You could replace your grips by a Karl Nill, because they are very good to shoot full loaded ;357 magnum.

I only have anecdotal evidence but supposedly Talo refuses any from SW that have the typical mass production issues i.e. No canted barrels, etc

I wouldn't count on it. My Talo arrived with poorly cut extractor ratchet that cause jerky trigger action. It had to go back to the factory. So I don't think you can count on Talo to weed out all the quality issues.

If TALO's claim to fame included inspecting the guns, you'd think they'd put it in their marketing materials. Can you imagine: "Buy a S&W revolver that's actually been inspected!"

I use Hogue bantams on my 6XX's sans my 642 which is fine for me. I like the round butt aspects of the 6XX's but I'm not sure how familiar you are with that. They will have more of a roll-up to them much like using a SA. I use S/A's a lot and I like the rolling features of them. If you do decide to switch to the bantams, just let it roll-up and don't try to fight it.

Ahrends. Type of stock that should come standard. Best for carry. Hogue Bantams are great but can be sticky concealed.

My Talo 686+ is the finest I've ever owned or shot.

My 5" TALO 686+ is an awesome shooter & as good or better than either my 627PC or PC 327TRR8, NOW.

Unfortunately, it had/has a canted barrel that somehow didn't look as bad when I inspected it before purchasing.

After re-chamfering the forcing cone & chamfering the crown it groups great.

No way I'm sending it back to the factory for the cant. I just leave the windage cranked over & don't touch it.

I can live with that, but I shouldn't of had too.

I hate to chime in on this but.......

When the 3-5-7 series was finally offered in my state, I went out and collected them when they went on sale.

All of them had lop sided cut force cones. The worst was the 3". All my shots would bunch up in a corner at a measly 7 yards. With groups way off at the 15 yards. I quickly sent it in and was returned with the b/c gap more evenly cut with a note; saying it was corrected with a barrel cant issue!

How did I miss that one! Lol.

The 5" I have, is as yet, still unfired.
My absolute favourite is the 7".(out of that bunch) It will shoot within the 9 ring at 25 yards. (Standing) Without trying too hard. Probably in a 10 ring on a rest, but I dont shoot from a rest.

Pic .of 686+ 7" (3-5-7 series). The load it "liked" was the .53 disk w231/ 158gr plated (Rainier)357 magnum with WSPM primers...

UPDATE: I just visited the TALO website and looked at their S&W collection. They clearly stated that any example of my revolver (357 Series 686) produced within the last 3 years is not an authorized TALO exclusive product. Since Grabagun is currently advertising them as TALO exclusives, they are engaging in false advertising. This also means that TALO had nothing to do with my revolver and is therefore unable to guarantee its quality.

Howdy,
They drew blood from my thumb today, where they had put a blister a few days ago. Anyway, I've ordered some Hogue Bantams which I hope will fix that problem.

What I have found is that a high hold with a 357 drives the recoil into the thumb and web of your hand. The same hold, with bantam grips, will give the same result.
Use a lower hold, so the recoil will be driven into the palm of your hand.
If you really want to use a high hold, get either the Hogue Tamer grip or the Pachmayr gripper, decelerator, or presentation grip. These grips all have rubber completely covering the backstrap and they work.

Thanks for the tip, Andy. The Bantams are working fine though. The top corner of the factory grips that came with mine are pretty square instead of rounded, like Magnas would be. It's not exactly sharp, but sharp enough to raise a blister and then break it after a box or less of magnums.
