Model 29 Mountain gun

Hello all, I recently picked up a model 29 Mountain Gun that has super tight cylinder throats, .430 will not go. Has anybody ran into throats this tight before? Also anybody no of anyone that opens up cylinder throats?

Alex Hamilton at ten ring precision does a great action / accuracy package the polishes all action parts, sets trigger pull, set heads pace and cylinder gap, recrowns barrel polishes and numbers chambers, opens throat and cuts forcing cone to 11 degrees. All for around $200. He has done 6 for me and I am super pleased. Google him and you will be impressed. S & W even used to send him work.

Throats got tightened up years ago
I want to say, starting with 629-3/29-4 they went to .4285"
They may have loosened them up since but gone are the days of .432" and sometimes bigger

You're close Rod-buster. I know my 629-3 6 1/2" Classic is still on the loose side. I believe the change happened with the 629-4/ 29-6 engineering updates. That was when they started drilling & tapping all of the topstraps too. The 629-3 & 29-5 Classics were D&T'ed first. I know there are a lot of folks that would much rather have the tighter cylinder throats including myself. Most all of the jacketed bullets are .429 now and .430 lead likes a tight squeeze. Much better for accuracy past 25 yards. I'd leave well enough alone.

I thought my 5" -3 classic had tighter throats but I'm probably mis -remembering and to lazy to check

Thanks everyone, I never expected them to be this tight. I will check into Alex. I have around 4000 cast bullets for other 44 specials that I shoot but nothing smaller than .430. May look for a sizing die first

I think you will find .430 bullets to be very accurate in your gun. My Stealth Hunter has .4285 throats and I've shot thousands of .430 bullets with it with superb accuracy. Actually the gentleman that I purchase bullets from changed his sizing dies to size my bullets at .430 and other customers told him that the "new" bullets they bought seemed to be more accurate. He never switched back to .429 sizing dies.

Series guy, thanks for the info. I will definitely shoot it first before I do anything to it. Good to know the .430 bullets work well because I have a bunch. Thanks again everyone for the advice, I bought the gun unifier so I'm looking forward to breaking it in
