I've had a 4" Model 65 and a 4" Model 67. But I've always wanted a 3" K-frame (until I learned how expensive they are)

A LGS has a Model 65-5 in the counter, and the tag says it's a 3 and a half inch barrel. Can that be right? or is more likely a 3" that someone has just measured wrong? I fondled it and it's definitely shorter then a 4".

thx

Standard barrel lengths for the model 65 were/are 3" and 4". If it really has a 3 1/2" barrel it has been cut down from a 4", but the -5 was made in 3" also.

If your GS is really L I'd go back and have a look, with a ruler. :)

what kind of signs could indicate that the barrel has been cut down? anything I should look for on the crown?

Can you post a pic?
Don't have a 4" but here's old pic of a -5 and -3 in 3".

I'm guessing they measured from the front of the frame.
wouldn't that make it a 4" barrel then?

As I understand, the measurement should start from forward face of the cylinder. Or more precisely, from the rear edge of the forcing cone, so as not to include the cylinder gap. right?

Yes, sounds like a 4".

Ignore the cylinder gap, it's negligible when using a tape measure. S&W nominal barrel lengths can vary by 1/8" (.125"). The gap should be somewhere between .004" and .010" (read that 10 thousandths of an inch).

That's definitely a 3-inch Model 65. If there is nothing wrong with it, it would be a great carry piece.

I have both. picked the two up at a farm auction. had to have the timing fixed on the 3 inch m65. otherwise, both the 3 and 4 inch are great shooters.

That's a legitimate 3" gun and the rubber stocks may not be original but are probably better for shooting than Magna wood stocks. Did you buy it?

BTW, Jack's 3" model 65 with the ejector rod shroud is a Lady Smith. Probably also a -5, although there are -6s and 7s.

Yes, top is -5 LS.
Are you certain about the -# on one in your pic?
Also, did you mention asking price??? I like those grips. Looks like a working gun to me.
the one I'm looking at is a 65-5, clearly stamped on the yoke.

They are asking $450. Which seems too good to be true for a 3" k-frame?

PM me the contact info, I wouldn't be sitting on my *** wondering if I should buy a $450 3" K-frame stainless 357 magnum.

I just measured it: it's a 3" barrel. They let me take a pic.

rubber grips and no box. Definitely not a safe queen.

Those are Uncle Mike's grips. Not a safe queen, but it could look a whole lot worse. If you want a 3" 65 you'd be crazy to pass this one up. Buy it TODAY, as soon as they open. I'll bet you won't be sorry.
