I am new to the S&W Forum but have been shooting Smiths for 40 years. I have several Smiths, but I need guidance to locate a manufacturer or gunsmith where I can buy or have fabricated a 4 Inch 629 full underlug barrel. I have been asking S&W to offer the 629 with the 4" full underlug barrel for the last 30 years, but the best they would do was to offer to make 200 guns for me. Too expensive for me. So does anyone have an idea to point me in the right direction?

Honestly your best bet would be to locate a used Dan Wesson with a four inch barrel. I too have been longing for a full lug four incher.

I would buy a 6.5" and have the barrel cut to 4". Shouldn't be to hard to get done.

I have explored using a4" 610 barrel, It needs to be rebored for .429 and the forcing cone cut down and rebored since the 610 cylinder is shorter than the 629 cylinder. Also explored cutting down a 6.5 in underlug barrel. That would put the the cut just about where it is marked .44 Magnum on the side. Also how would the front sight be reattached without looking too unsightly?

I bought a 6.5" Classic and had the barrel cut down to 4". It is one great handing revolver. I had it done in Denver by an excellent local smith.

Quite a while ago, Hamilton Bowen made one. I’m not sure whether it was for a customer or just to gratify his own curiosity. When he showed it to me I immediately should have insisted he make one for me, but I wasn’t sharp enough, and the project slipped my mind for too long. It’s not a terribly big job, but naturally I’d want it done right, and no one has a better eye for detail than Mr. Bowen. Most likely you’re going to have to find a gunsmith willing to cut down a longer barrel, recrown it in the factory style, remark it, and reinstall a front sight that suits you. It’s a great idea, as far as I’m concerned. If you do go ahead and have one so modified, I hope you’ll be sure to tell us about it.

So far Laketime and I are on board for Smith to offer the 629 in 4" full underlug. Now I have to sell 198 more before I place an order.
Stu1Ritter has the 629 I have been wanting for far too long,

I'd buy one too! Yep - add the Classic DX front sight base. You can do that even if you have to cut a barrel shorter. You get them from Bowen Classic.

Okay, I got the project rolling. I have a 629 4" gun as the donor frame. I have located a 6.5" full underlug barrel and the Bowen DX front sight. Am now talking to my gunsmith about doing the necessary surgery to modify the 6.5" barrel to 4" and installing it on the donor frame. If successful I will post pics here.
