My pocket carry S&W 637 has malfunctioned. I needed to fire it this week for some pest control on my property and it was difficult to cock. I got it cocked and trigger didn’t want to pull but it did and I barely dented the primer- no shot fired. I was able to open the cylinder and empty the ammo from it.

Kept fooling around with it, but once I cocked the hammer, it won’t release. The hammer was frozen in the cocked position. The cylinder spins by hand and of course it shouldn’t. The internal lock flag was noticeably loose during this, so when I got home and found a key I turned the lock a few times and was finally able to release the hammer. Now the hammer is difficult to cock and has hard trigger pull.

A call to S&W and it’s now with FedEx on the way back to S&W for inspection.

Luckily I didn’t pull this weapon in a case where I desperately needed it. Does this sound like a case of the internal lock failing?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Picture, this part was very loose during the time the gun was locked up.

My guess

So my 637-2 had a handspring issue and the cylinder wouldn’t turn. 6 weeks later back from the factory and good to go

The internal lock also has a small spring underneath
my guess is that spring failed and loosened the lock

Guess we will find out but my vote goes to a bad spring

Now i’m considering removing my lock or getting one of the plug kits
hmmmmmm

And double happy I got a no lock 442-1 the other day
a rebate was icing on the cake

I too have a 637 which had the lock problem, causing the action to seize up. I called S&W and they said they could fix it, but the turn-around would be several months. I checked with a local gunsmith, and he also said he had several month's backlog. This was five years ago, and I didn't want to be without my favorite HD revolver. Then I saw JD's ad for Original Precision Lock Delete, bought one, and after the install, no more problems.

Thanks, they didn’t say but sure hope mines not gone several months! I’ll also check out JD’s ad since this isn’t my only S&W with the lock.

Doesn't sound like a lock problem. I wonder if your trigger pin sheared off, or your hammer pin sheared off.

S&W will let you know.
