This long and difficult day ended on a high note. My good friends at Carolina Sporting Arms in Charlotte, NC called to say that my new "no lock" Model 36-11 arrived today.

It looks great. Hard to take good photos inside. Excuse the oil smudges. I think it looks sharp. Still waiting on the new 10, 19, both Mountain Guns, and the titanium UC.

Looks like Smith & Wesson is on the right track. If I could make one suggestion, let's bring back a vintage looking "classic" box.

I like it. Very nice. If Smith could only do something about reshaping the frame under the hammer like the vintage ones, it would be perfect. Enjoy your new gun in good health. Thanks for showing.

Looks nice. I have a new no-lock Model 19 hopefully arriving Monday. I admit I'm a little apprehensive about whether it will turn out to be a lemon or not. I plan a thorough inspection of the gun before I accept the transfer, but I'm hoping it's good. If your Model 36 is good to go, that gives me hope. According to nyeti and Bryan Eastridge, Smith has stepped up their game with QC since the J Frame Ultimate Carry stuff after release last year. I hope that applies to mine and yours.

I think that would mean going back to old (perhaps no longer operative) tooling and forged action parts of the pre-J Magnum frame, so unlikely.

I just signed up today to post here about this. I received mine today and it was in REALLY bad condition. Multiple scratches on the cylinder, scratches on the side plate, blueing worn off on a spot on the frame, blueing *damaged* on the barrel. Marks and scratches on the back strap. Shavings/Crud in the chambers. This is the worst condition I have ever received a brand new firearm. I was going to refrain from posting the images while I coordinated with Smith & Wesson but they decided to leave me hanging and went home for the weekend leaving me in the dark. So here are all the photos.

I must be missing something. I don’t understand paying more for a new model than an original no lock gun. We all know the QC is horrible these days as stated above as a perfect example. Is it about just owning the newest product? I can’t see any advantage at all. Maybe I’m overlooking something and need to be guided in the right direction. It made since with the new Pythons and other Colts at half the price of the older ones, but I can’t see $1k for a model 36 or 10

I know these were just introduced and released, but that looks a lot like a used gun, especially with the turn line. I’m very suspect that that gun is BNIB…

Thats what everybody is saying. It just straight up looks used. Like it got years worth of use. But these were literally announced 2 weeks ago, how can that even be possible? The only two possibilities I can think of is that either Smith & Wesson boxed it up to ship to a distributor after using it as a factory example/demo OR the retailer who sold it got it, proceeded to just have fun with it for a week, then shipped it out like nothing happened.

Either way this is product was delivered in completely unacceptable condition. Frankly, I'm kind of done with it all. I've pretty much made up my mind that the only revolver worth it's salt to me anymore is the old pencil barrel M&P 38 ive got in the safe. Shoots like a laser and handles it all like a champ.

Beautiful revolver. I am envious. My with lock Model 19 that I bought new in December, is a fantastic revolver. Smith & Wesson is still very capable of making great firearms.

The most vocal critics are usually the small minority that do have problems or some sort of axe to grind. Thank God we did not have the internet back in the day.

I really don't see what people are talking about with it looking used... like, where? Just the turn line?

I think the turn line might just be in the oil from the new gun. Could be wrong.

Unfortunately not. Wiped the whole pistol down and it was covered in marks and scratches on the back strap, the frame, the barrel, the cylinder. Blueing worn in multiple places. The photos don't do it justice. Everybody that has looked at it both in person and text message (photos) has said without influence that the gun appears used.

See above.

Welcome and sorry for your troubles.

Did you have the option of examining it carefully before accepting the gun?

I would contact factory customer service with the images shown and see if they will help with your situation. As you noted, it looks as though it was used as a display or demo gun. The turn line can be prominent even on a lightly used S & W but the other defects should not be there on a new gun.

Apologies, I was looking at the OP's pictures and thought that's what people were referring to. Didn't see your post.

Yeah that's unacceptable. I'd send it back to Smith and politely demand a new one, or politely demand a refund.

I really hope my no-lock Model 19 isn't like that. I'm going to go over it with a fine tooth comb when I get to the dealer before I accept the transfer.

Looks good. How does it shoot? What does the trigger weigh in double and single action?
