quick question for my knowledgeable forum pals...i have ordered my first can of renaissance wax...i plan to use this on a number of blued and maybe a nickle antique...my question is the prep to the gun before using the wax...simply wipe it down well to remove any oil residue? i think i saw here where only a small amount is used...wipe in a circular motion, then remove...if the waxed gun goes to the range....clean as normal...wipe..then wax again?
thanks so much!:)

The wax itself will clean the metal.
You can wipe down first with a soft cloth if you want.

After you've handled the gun more than a little or used it, apply more wax.

The Rennie company also makes a preliminary cleaner. It works fairly well, but it may have a slight abrasive in it, although I have yet to note any issues with my blued guns.

I only use the prelim once in awhile, usually if there is a little more than normal oily-ness. The wax doesn't go on too well with oil on the gun.

I suppose that you could use a degreaser as well, but have not tried that either.

The wax really makes your guns look wet.

Along they same line.Do you put it on areas that have a matte finish?
Thanks,
Gary

Yes. Just apply it with your fingertip, let it "set up" and turn hazy, just like car paste wax, and then, buff, buff, buff, with a soft cloth. I have tried both 100% cotton, e.g., diapers, and microfiber cloth. Both work fine, but the cotton is more absorbent, and seems to do a better job. I see no need for any special cleaning other than a wipe-down, before you begin.

as a followup...received the ren.wax...so far i have waxed a python and a M16-4....both with 6"tubes...i applied with fingertip, allowed to haze over, removed with soft t-shirt....they both look spectacular!glossy wet look....i wiped them both down well with a cloth prior to waxing...this stuff is as good or better then advertised!

Glad that it works for you, it has for me. I really like that stuff! I even used it on one of my shotguns.

Never let your wife throw away any flannel shirts or flannel PJ's.. Cut up for polishing rags. Soft and having been washed many times as soft as you can get.

if i had pj's of any description...believe me...SHE would have tossed them out long ago;)

good idea -- that's what I use for buffing wax off my cars when I wax them...of course, it's a good idea to cut the buttons off before using them! :)
