Has anyone ever put Armor-all on ribber grips? I am thinking it would make them look nice but worried it would make them slippery.

I only use it on Pachmayr since as far as I can tell they are the only true rubber stocks. Most of them are santoprene, nylon, or other. I scrub my Pachy's with an Armor-All soaked tooth brush to clean and then store them and wipe them off for use. A dampened cloth gets rid of the slick feel and makes them range ready. These days I'm working hard at just finding wood that fits my hand proper. I still put the Hogue X frame on the 629 for real magnum loads though. And I guess I should admit to the Pach Compac that goes on the 640 if I'm going to shoot magnums from it.

I bought some Altamonts for my 686, but they did not fit my hand right. So for now I am sticking with the Pachmayr. I just wanted to clean them up some.

Does anyone know if the original Ruger SP101 grips are rubber or something else?

More santoprene from what I have been told.

How did your Altamonts not fit? Did they make it better with a new set?

They just did not fit my hand the way I like. They force a low grip on the backstrap.

Ah, I see. I have a set of Altamont’s J frame Boot stocks and I love them. I only recently took them off to put on the factory originals with one of Wrangler5’s BK Grip Adapters. For my hand, all the skinny or thick magna’s need some kind of grip adapter to fill in the top front area just behind the trigger guard loop. What gun and what type of stock did you buy? Right now I’m on a binge buying run with Ahrends stocks. I just opened a box with a set of cocobolo square butt N frame tactical finger groove stocks and I love them already… This is what I get for not checking the mail yesterday and grabbing it on my way into work… I’m going to show them off and drool on them all day now. My only rip on Pachmayr rubber or anyone else’s Santoprene is that the dang things seem to force my guns to rust under the rubber. I can oil the grip frame, use grease, or whatever and they will still get a tiny rust spot here and there. It drives me nuts. I bought a tub of Rig grease because I kept reading it was supposed to be one of the better greases for this purpose. Bull hocky…

P.S. – I guess no one else is replying to this as there is a huge stigma against “Goodyears” on guns on this forum. If you browse my thread about this subject you will see I caught a lot of flack on this subject. I did my best not to be too sensitive to the verbal flogging, but some of the replies just hit a nerve. In retrospect it was kind of silly and I should just learn to dismiss more of what I read. Good luck. And check out Ahrends. You might join me in loving them. I’m ordering a maple set for a new K frame I just bought.

Pachmayr recommends the use of Armor-All on their grips.

To prevent rusting under rubber grips, apply a coat of wax to the frame and let dry before reinstalling the grips.
The wax will prevent rust better than oils or greases that will migrate away from where you want it.

I recommend Johnson's Paste Wax or Renaissance Hard Carnuba. NO CAR WAX.
Just apply a medium thick coat and let it dry about 20 minutes before reinstalling the grips.

To me Armor-All on gun grips is a alot like putting it on a motorcycle seat and handlebar's. Somebody's going to get hurt!

I'm hoping he means more for cleaning and storing them since he didn't say shooting them. Armor-All for me does both those very well and it doesn't leave a build up that can't be removed very easily on range day so it is nice and clean and ready to shoot. I use a damp terry cloth towel to wipe the rubber down and then I can go to town with even magnums and no slipping.

I tired Hoppes oil at first and that was no good. I bought some of the Johnsons paste Wax and that is working rather well so far. It was cheap and available at the Home Depot during a shopping trip for other stuff for the yard. I just ran across it in the cleaning gear area next to inside lawn and garden in my store.

At least in automotive applications, folks tend to slop on Armorall and just leave it as a shiny & slimy surface, rather than applying it, rubbing it in, then removing the excess.

Not sure that grips really need to be conditioned from excess heat, UV and ozone exposure, but that's apparently more a matter of preference.
