Trying to tame my wife's 642 . So I thought to ask the people in the know . Has anyone tried to mag-na-port a 2 inch barrel and if you did . How did it effect the recoil . Thanks for any help

Mag-Na-Porting is not that effective on 38 Special. It needs high speed gasses to function well.

You want a single expansion chamber compensator instead. S&W often calls this a Power Port. It is far more effective with low speed gases.

What you might really want to do is have her try the same ammunition in the heavier 640. That will make her happy

I've got a 640 Carry Comp. A Performance Center gun that has a one port compensator. I can't tell any difference in recoil between that and regular J frame snub nose revolvers in the same caliber.

A j-frame is not a target/range gun, it's a self-defense gun and porting is a bad idea on a defensive handgun because if you have to fire from a retention position, it will blast hot gases and debris up toward your eyes. It's a distraction(especially at night in the dark) and could cause permanent vision damage at a possibly critical moment.

Rather than go the expensive and possibly ineffective route of drilling the barrel, consider a tried-and-true and less costly approach first: different grips and ammo.

And between the two, grips first -- the right ones can make a night-and-day difference in perceived recoil, even with stout loads, and in concert with the right round, can transform a snubby kicker into a fun gun to shoot.

Suggest one of the rubber offerings from Hogue or Pachmayr; Hogue's Tamer is a recent one that gets a lot of raves for those in your situation.
