I bought a K-22 several months ago that was wearing a pair of Herrett stocks. I was not too thrilled with them but luckily the original Magna grips came with the gun also. So in the drawer went the Herretts.

I carry a Model 67 while deer hunting and hiking trails and wanted to preserve the original grips on that gun so I slapped the Herretts on. To be honest, they felt mighty comfortable in my rather average to small hand. I was not liking the color (mustard, not unlike Grey Poupon) or the wood to metal fit along the backstrap.

So I decided to strip and refinish them and also improve the fit.

Here are the before pics

First step was to soak them in acetone. Be sure to use a metal container. I once put some acetone in a Solo cup and it ate through that cup in seconds. What a dangerous mess that was.

I soaked them for 24 hours and then used a toothbrush to remove all the loose Grey Poupon (GP). After that I used an exacto knife to gently scrape and pick out the GP from the checkering. Some light sanding with 320 grit constantly wetted with mineral spirits removed some stubborn blotches on the smooth areas.

Lots of stock and grip makers use a colored lacquer to hide the "flaws" in less expensive wood.Never know what might be under the mud [emoji1]

Next I addressed the overhanging wood on the backstrap area and also rounded the upper horns for a more eye appealing contour (at least for me). In addition, I re-contoured the heel area as I didn't like the excessive overhang and profile.
