Proper orginal grip screws?
OK, I bought a set of round butt J frame magnas off of EBAY and they came with a screw that isn't original. I then ordered a short supposedly new grip screw, the shortest available. I got the screw today and it is a tad to long plus it is fully threaded. All my other screws are only partially threaded. Are original screws full thread, partial, or both? I need to figure out if I got.....screwed

Good question. I am interested in the answer from the experts as well.
All of mine, from various decades, have been only partially threaded, so my answer would be that.

A full threaded screw is not a S&W original!
The correct overall length for a round and sq butt J frame with factory grips is 15/16" or .958".

Anyone have a good source for replacement screws? Somehow I have several sets of grips with no screws.

Ace hardware stores that have the Hillman gun screw collection. 5-44 thread one inch long works for most J frame grips and most K frame service grips. The head diameter may need to be ground a little smaller in diameter. I have used them many times with no issues other than the head diameter needing to be reduced just a little. You could spin one in a drill and use sandpaper to do it.

Yes:
After about the mid 1970s, the J frame grip screw changed from a 3-48 to 5-44 same as the larger frames.

has a bunch of old S&W parts for sale. I just ordered a complete hammer for my pre model 30 from them. They are very customer oriented and have very reasonable prices. 1/10/16

Unfortunately it is only "some" Ace Hardware stores, and my local store isn't one of them.

For the record, if anyone cares, my semi-auto 439 has 5x44 grip screws too.
