I would like to put a peep sight on my Winchester Model 72A. My question is will there be any drilling involved? This is a family heirloom do drilling is not an option. Also, what peep sight would you recommend?

Are their any factory D&T holes in the receiver? I seem to remember them coming with factory peeps at one time. Is the top of the receiver grooved for a .22 scope on the "A" model? If so, there are a number of sight makers who make a peep sight that will just mount on the groove.

The regular Model 72A came with a standard rear bbl sight. The same stamped steel notched bbl sight that Win used on most of their .22's

The Model 72A 'Target' deleted the rear bbl sight (above).
Instead it supplied a Winchester #80A rear Aperture sight (peep sight)
along with a ramp front sight w/ hood.

This mounts to the left rear side of the action with screws. The holes factory D&T'd of course on the Target 72A's.
But the sight can be fitted to standard Model 72A rifles by doing the D&T operation to the rifle.
The stock also needs to be notched on that left side for the sight .

The bad news....those #80A sights are very hard to find and $$.
If the seller knows what they have the sight if complete with screws, base, base plate, aperture disc, etc will likely cost $150 and up.
If you put the #80 rear sight on the rifle, the standard front sight will be too low.
The matching Target Front sight that went on the rifles along with the #80 rear sight was the #97 Front sight assembly.
I have no idea if they are around and how much they go for.

Late production regular Model 72A rifles were machined with dovetail 'tip-off' style scope rails for popular 3/4" scope mounts.
There are some aperture sights that fit these standard tip off rail mounts and one of those sights may be the easiest and less expensive way to get a peep sight on to the rifle and it won't entail D&T or any other modifications to the rifle.
