If I want to buy some new rear sight blades what do the measurements represent? How do I measure mine to obtain replacements?

There was a chart floating around this forum that gave the measurements of the standard sight blades used on the S&W models with micrometer click rear sights. The thread described the correct way to measure the sights. Try a search.

Here is the old list

The dimension of the rear sight slide is from the bottom of the straight part of the slide to the top of the blade. It is not the depth of the sight notch. You can easily measure the height of the slide in your gun by turning the windage so the slide is as far left as it will go and measuring the over-hanging end with a micrometer or dial caliper.

The distance changing the height of the slide will make in POI depends on the length of your barrel. A 2" will change much more than a 6".

Thx colt ssa, I actually had found it.
So the .146 is total height? Are there different notch widths and depths?
I just need some in better shape, brighter white outlines. Anything to help the old eyes.
Isnt there a special bit for the nut?

Sight Blades

The S&W K-L-N sight blades are replaced by turning the adjustment screw until the screw breaks and the screw end piece will be on the sight's internal brass threaded collet when the threaded circular tang on the bottom of the blade comes off the screw.. When you order a new blade, also order a new 'sight screw'...

DO THIS in a plastic bag as there is a spring about 1/8" wide by 3/16" long along with a metal 'spiked insert' that makes the screw 'click' and they will go flying if you don't know they're in there to surprise you... when dropped, you'll never find them.

They are stamped metal and could or could not come with the white hairline. The hairline has very little 'paint thickness'- almost translucent and it wears off pretty easily.

If you don't like this style and your S&W is one of the new generations with the two holes pre-drilled in the top strap in front of the sights, you can opt for fiber rod LPA's or similar. Not Cheap..****nning anywhere from $60 to $140 depending on Mfr.

Here's a pic of a set of LPA's on a 617. The top strap had the correct mounting holes drilled into the top strap.
