Thanks for the responses everyone. Do you think the elimination of this normal "melting" was a cost saving step since it didn't have a mechanical purpose? Or was it possibly linked to an engineering or production change given that it disappeared around a general date? JF

I see this grind mark on a couple of my early 1980s stainless revolvers and in photos on the forum. From forum photos I've reviewed it seems to disappear from the ejector shroud in the mid-eighties or so. I assume it is related to the pin on the shroud, but would love to know the story of the...

They came from the factory on some models and others here could give you more complete details as to which models. They were also available as an aftermarket accessory from S&W, so they are totally appropriate for your -3. JF

Kernel and all, Here is the front of the box and a better shot of the label. Were all 629s shipped in the same size box? I think it is original as the original receipt from January 1983 is in the box along w/ tools and paperwork. Thanks. JF

I'm reviving this very informative and interesting thread to see what you all think about this one. Its a hand written label on a one piece box for a 1982-ish revolver. I'm not making any judgment about anyone and am just curious. I bought the 629 not the box. What do you think? Thanks. JF

Nice find Allen-frame! And a fair price. The 631 is one of my favorites. Mine came w/ combat grips but I prefer the target grips. JF
