    Model 19 Kframe.357 Combat Masterpiece

I own a 4" 1957 pre-19 Combat Magnum and a 6" 19-3 both with checkered factory wood grips. I don't have any problem with recoil out of either Smith (big hands), but my 6" Ruger GP100 with full-length underlug barrel is the real recoil-tamer. I have been shooting a mix of 38 SP and .357 from...

    Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

Pair of Combat Magnums Well, I felt a little uneasy about popping off random rounds at the range with a family heirloom, and that Smith looked awful lonely in the gun cabinet with all those Rugers and the Colt, so I bought a companion 19-3, 6-inch barrel Model 19 to keep it company. :D

    Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

Took the vintage Smith out to the range late this afternoon with my 6" Ruger GP100 for a little back-to-back comparo. I actually like shooting .38 special a bit better than full house 357 with the Smith . It was cloudy and dark, so the Smith did put out some pretty impressive muzzle flash...

    Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

Nice detail When's the last time you saw a mainstream manufacture bother to grain match the bottom of the grips? Not lately I bet!

    Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

Smith in the box I mentioned this has a box, here it is. I seriously didn't do much to this other than give it a good cleaning, and a little polish on the grips. Looked like it hadn't been cleaned in 20 years. It has been carried some with a bit of muzzle wear, but probably not shot much...

    Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

One of these bad boys (in pristine condition with box, tools, papers) just sold on GB for $1,826. Serial 261606. That one has the SN stamped inside the ejector rod shroud.

    Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

Pre 19 details Some interesting details on this one: * No serial number is visible when cylinder is closed * SN is stamped on frame under yoke, and bottom of grip frame * Different number 383xx stamped on yoke, and repeated on grip frame * Grip is grain matched on the bottom Cool!

    Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

I have the original box in fair-to-good condition, and my aunt has the receipt. The original receipt (no price on it) is dated 1958 and the gun was originally purchased in PA in 1958. Another forum member told me the gun was one of the last pre-19 production.

    Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

I also have to admit owning 7 Rugers, 4 wheelguns, an auto and 2 rifles in various calibers, hope I'm not banished from the forum!!! This isn't like Chevy vs. Ford vs. Mopar is it?

    Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

Seriously, I used some 0000 super fine steel wool with some penetrating oil, veeeeeeery carefully, then a nylon toothbrush with some Hoppes #9, a few blasts of Remington gun solvent to the cylinder & bore, then a going over with more Hoppes inside & out, then a light film of gun oil for the...

    Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

Here are some closeups of the rust damage after a little cleanup. I used my Milwaukee sander and some 3M 40-grit. Looks good eh? :D It's not too noticeable if you're just holding the gun and not taking closeups under a strong light. ;)

    Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

Here are some pics of the S&W I bought from my 84 year old aunt, from my uncle's estate. I took a belt sander and cleaned off the rust, it looks much better now.
