+1 what mikld said, and don't forget the "plunk test" when working up a new cartridge.

    Observations from the dark side

Anything less than a 2 inch group demanded a second look at 15 yards. In the chain of pistol, cartridge, and shooter I know I am the weak link!

    Observations from the dark side

Oh yes I did follow up groups. And in larger batches. I started at 30 yards but dropped down to 15. Now that I have loads I am comfortable with phase 2 will be 30 and ultimately 50 yards.. And, a chronograph may be in the future. Noylj, thanks for the tip on twist rates, I have started...

    Observations from the dark side

About 2 1/2 years ago I purchased a pistol that was a highly regarded accurate pistol. I started a journal and began recording bullets, powders, and so on. I used the very best loading techniques I knew to get consistency from cartridge to cartridge and batch to batch. I worked up loads from...

    9mm powder

To answer the op, Yes. I have tried and worked up loads in the other powders mentioned above and some I had good results. Every pistol will behave differently. I liked Power Pistol because it gave me excellent case fill, consistent metering, and the tightest grouping at 15 yards. And I would...

    Are Colt Pythons that good.......

My 2 cents, I have had a Python since the 70's. Superbly accurate. I use to brag if I can see it I can hit it. (140 gr. Speers as previously posted). The only point I dislike is the stock grip. I now have a 686+(performance center) to compare it to. Didn't like the grip on it either. Still...

    cylinder throat diameter, too tight?

I changed up my searches and went to people that make their living working on revolvers to be more accurate. What I came away with was the cylinder throat needs to be .001 to .002 larger than the bullet. And the bullet needs to be the same size and the groove diameter.

    cylinder throat diameter, too tight?

Thanks for the responses. No panic button here. I am an accuracy nut. I compared the cylinder throat of this pistol to my very accurate Python. I can drop a .358 dia. bullet thru it and it rattles but falls thru. I have slugged a 9mm before and will do that as a last resort. My thoughts were...

    cylinder throat diameter, too tight?

I purchased a new 686+ and I have been working up new loads searching for what works best for it. Its going slower than expected. I am looking now at the cylinder diameter. I have used the search function and suggested topics, but it doesn't get exactly what I need. I do not have gauge pins...

    Where do you get advice?

A recent thread by BB57 brought up this topic. He cautioned. I totally agree. When I decided to start carrying every day, going for my license, ect, I looked at every forum and YouTube, listened to everyone that voiced an opinion whether it was weapon of choice, shooting style or everything...

With a revolver do you still want to hold as high as possible? A question of grips

fishnfool has the right message about the trigger pulling straight back, and BB57 demonstrates it in pic #1. Even Jerry M says from the draw his grip may not be perfect, and he may or may not try to adjust it!

With a revolver do you still want to hold as high as possible? A question of grips

Plus 1 for holding high on a revolver like Jerry Miculek. Also finger groves are useless for me too. On a pistol my off hand index finger is on the front of the trigger guard. NOT however on a revolver. On my Walther PPQ my grip is very high and almost interferes with the slide release, on my...

M65 How to Remove Light Scratches

I put a bad scratch on my new 686+. I was stupid and it pained me to see it. I have sanded a lot of wood and I know you can make a small problem into a much bigger glaring problem with the wrong approach. I started out with 400 grit wet/dry paper using a very limited stroke. It did very well...

HELP me Pick My First S&W 686

I purchased a 4 inch 686-6 and am very pleased. I have a 6 inch Python and I prefer the better balance of the Smith. I did not like the grips that came with it and made my own. I am a wood and leather type of guy. If you are recoil sensitive examine how you grip the weapon and how it fits...

    Sorting 357 Magnum brass?

I am getting back into shooting and reloading after a very long nap. I have started sorting my 9mm brass by head stamp and then again by weight for my target pistol, to try to eliminate fliers. Everything else is loaded up for practice for my EDC. Does anyone do that for your 357 brass? My...

    New 686 plus owner

As of March 1st I am the proud owner of the 4 inch model. Weather and my job have stopped me from shooting it so far. It has an enhanced trigger from the performance center, the Davidsons Gallery of Guns version. It is smooth and its double action trigger pull is better than my python. (never...
