Anyone out there using a Merit Optical Attachment for bullseye shooting? I have one that needs a replacement suction cup but the Merit web site is a bit sparse on information. Any idea where I might be able to purchase a replacement?

If there is a phone number on their site call them. Several years ago I wanted a new eye cup for my Merit Master Disk and they were able to provide one. I have had that Master Disk since ca. 1958.

Just an FYI for anyone else out there with one. No phone numbers on the site. Just an email address that no one seems to be monitoring. They have numbers for a couple of sellers but nothing helpful.

I quit using the Merit device when I got plastic lenses in my glasses. The suction cup scuffs the coating. Any little bit of dirt just makes the scuffing worse. Old-style glass lenses didn't have that trouble.

I went to the Gehman iris. It clips on and is a better iris to boot. Available from Champion's choice:

An iris can be a great help by increasing depth of field, but it darkens things, so in low light I have troubles. Outdoor Bullseye, it's fine. When we go indoors, not so much.

There are clip on diopter lenses that help one to focus on the front sight. I have one and it works well. Also, I can just use my computer glasses which give a closer focus. Of course the target is blurry, so a compromise in power is needed. That makes the sights "clear enough" and the target "clear enough."

Progressive lenses work well when you turn them upside down in the frame; if in correct position of leaning forward a touch and chin down.

I have 2.75 magnification on the top and 1.75 on the bottom portion. Everyone drops their chin when aiming; which means you are looking out of the top part of your lenses at the front sight. You need more magnification at the top of lenses for up-close front sight.

I can now see the front sight perfectly with my chin dropped and just raise my head a touch and see the target as well.

I use the Merritt style suction cup on my dedicated shooting glasses. If I had to, I would glue it on. It works great for me.

Oh course, some rookies lean backwards and tilt their chin up when aiming. Do that for awhile and your back and neck are in trouble.

I used a merit a bit, but as other have said it only works outdoors with lots of light. It's slow, which is fine for bullseye. I tried to shoot quals with it once and was not happy. That being said I guess try hobby sites for a suction cup? I shot today at an indoor range. Really nice range with good lighting but damn it was hard to see the sights and the target with a model 41.

I love my Merit and actually had two until last week, then the inevitable happened and one popped-off my shooting glasses as I was changing position on the range and despite a bunch of searching it was really an truly lost. Good thing I have a backup, it's around here somewhere...

Used that event as an excuse to buy the Gehmann, though not from Champion's since they required one to create a login and I just wasn't in the mood to have yet another vulnerable password and database entry in yet another computer database. Anyway, waiting impatiently for it's arrival which will undoubtedly cause my "spare" Merit to come out of hiding.

The email address and phone number on Merit’s website are completely unresponsive. I tried. However, there are many small suction cups available on eBay that should be able to accept the screw on the Merit bracket. Look for something in the 15 - 20 mm size.

Where did you get your Gehmann from?

.

That was my red neck solution and it seems to be working out well. For those of you shooting iron sights and needing glasses to see the sights, I bought a pair of upside down bifocals with the 3.0 magnification at the top of the lens. I got them off of Amazon and they were of good quality. ASP or ASC is the brand but I don't have them in front of me and my memory is only slightly better than my vision. Getting old is not for the weak.
