Hi

Ive just ordered an m&p 15-22 and expect to pick it up in a couple of weeks. Im already looking through all the possible modifications. My wallet feels lighter already!

I will be looking to mainly use subsonic ammunition with a moderator (UK speak for suppressor). I was wondering if reduced power springs in the trigger mech would help with any possible cycling issues?

I have zero experience with the AR-15 platform so at the moment i dont feel confident playing around too much with the hammer and sear etc.

Any info is greatly appreciated

Thanks
Leigh

Hi UK 15 22

I too am a UK owner of an M&P 15 22. I put a JP trigger spring in my gun to great effect. It is very simple to do, the mechanism of the AR15 platform is so brilliantly simplistic it is easy to work on. I had no previous experience with tinkering with the workings of a firearm but I used this forum and the many youtube videos to get a good idea of what to do. I also adjusted the trigger creep(youtube) and polished up the trigger surfaces and the trigger is now as sweet as a nut.

The Smith and Wesson M&P15 22 manual recommends you do not use subsonic ammunition. Not sure why but I suspect it may result in ejector problems. I'm sure there are better qualified people on this forum that could clarify this.

I hope you left some money in your wallet because you will want to put plenty of lead through your new gun and start 'accessorising' it. You won't be able to resist.

Enjoy!

subsonic ammo is a debatable topic. the manual says don't use it. the reason is that it won't necessarily cycle the bolt, and additionally some subsonic ammo has the tendency to tumble rather than fly straight.

on the other hand plenty of people use it with no problems.
if you do use it just don't expect s&w to cover any damage.

I use CCI Standard Velocity (subsonic) in all my recreational .22 rifles and pistols, including my 15-22. Works fine.

They don't recommend subsonic ammo because it might not cycle the bolt properly. A lot of people use it just fine. Plus, if you are going suppressed, the added back pressure of the can will probably cycle the rifle just fine

I put that kit in my 15-22; it reduced the pull from a measured 6 pounds to about 5, and I started getting occasional misfires with Federal ammo. I swapped the original springs back in and left the rifle alone after that.

My original intent was to exactly match the pull in my 5.56 which has a Jard 3.5 pound pull; but experience has shown me that if the pull itself is a good one the exact weight is not really that important--at least not to me. Most of my shooting with both rifles is timed drills in offhand. Think fast and practical.

I have two similar rifles that perform quite well for me and a spare set of JP springs in a drawer. Turns out the 15-22 wasn't really broke after all.

Definitely go with the JP springs, on a budget it's the best trigger help you can get for the price. I have one in mine works excellent with the cci mini mags

J-P springs work for me

I've got the pistol, MOE and PC and all have benefitted from the spring mod and a very very light polish of the sears with Flitz to remove the gritty feeling. I must be blessed as I've not had any of the problems others have. A ftfire once in a great while but I feel it's the ammo, not the guns. I use the slack remedy except for the PC as it's a 2 stage RRA and they specifically state not to use it. It has not caused any function problems at all.

I've shot standard velocity, high velocity, and some sub-sonic match ammo with great success. I do not use the "not recommended" ammo.

I love my little friends! So much so I just bought a M&P15 Sporter. OMG, yet another way to make sure I don't ever have too much money!:D

Thanks for all the replies. I think i'll buy the JP springs and give the hammer a polish as per the "15 minute trigger job". Cant wait to pick my rifle up and give it a good run through!

JP springs are easy to install. The CCI standard velocity rounds work great in my 15-22. Remington sub-sonic won't realibility cycle in my 15-22, however. I have a suppressor installed, but the cycling issue is the same with or without the suppressor.

My experience notes the JP springs are unnecessary.

Search the "15 Minute AR15 Trigger Job." Other than polishing the sear points this requires cutting off one leg of the hammer spring and reforming (bending) the trigger spring legs at a certain point. Not only easy, it costs nothing.

I initially did this with my M&P15-22. Very nice trigger. I later picked up the JP yellow spring set and installed it. I can't tell any difference in feel or in measured trigger weight. The JP springs are still in there only because I haven't any other place to put them.

Try the "15 Minute AR15 Trigger Job." If you don't like it you can always fit the JP springs.
