I have two "shorty" 10 rounders, and neither of them "drop free" when I push the mag release button. Is this normal? Thanks!

Perfectly normal with 10 round mags :)

Our Club has three old Gen 1 models, bought about 5 years ago, and it took quite a while before the mags started to drop free.

I've got a newer Gen 2 model (M-Loc fore-end) bought last August. Had about 1k rounds through it and the mags still 'hang up'.

They'll free up in time :)

Hmm. They're supposed to but they don't? I have a Gen 2 rifle, too. I wonder where the mags are hanging up...

You could always try adjusting the magazine catch a little to see if that helps. If not, hit the mag with a little sandpaper if drop free is that important to you.

I could, but I don't need to do that...I'm just wondering why, if the mags are supposed to be drop free, they aren't.

My mags did the same thing, I took some sand paper and sanded the high points on the mags, now they drop free, and had no feeding issues from it.
Sand only the high points above where the mag well ends, also check your mage for ware marks, over time they will have marks, start sanding on those areas.

My 25-rounders don't drop free, either. I'll try hitting one of them with some light sandpaper. Seems odd to me that none of my six mags drop free.

Im assuming it depends on how u maintain ur rifle. Mine drops an empty 10rd just as easy as it does an empty 25rd. Push the mag release and gravity wins.

I took two turns towards "lightness" on the mag release, and now the mags drop free. Of course that means the entire mechanism will fall out and drop into the dirt on my next range trip! :)
