Modify 10-round mags to hold 12 rounds?

As a new owner of a 9mm compact (109204), the mags hold only 10 rounds. Since I did not receive the weapon yet, I understand that the mags are crimped to limit the rounds (CA law). I live in FL.

Can a I, or a gunsmith, modify these mags by un-crimping them? Or is it better to buy a 12-round mag?

The reality is I think a 10 round mag is plenty... but I am just exploring my options.

The magazine isn't crimped. The 10 round mags are short bodied and the capacity cannot be changed-at least economically/easily. If you want 12 round mags, buy 12 round mags if you legally can in your state.

I believe the 10 round .40S&W magazines will hold 12 rounds of 9mm. Still a "10 round magazine."

If they are legal in your state, pick up some of the full size mags. They hold 17 rounds and will fit in the compact, no problem. There is even a plastic piece that is sold that fills in the space between the compact grip and the full size mag so it feels like the full size M&P.

Why do you think your getting 10 round mags. Is this gun used. Can't you just order one with the 12 round mags. You can buy the 12 round mags then sell the 10 round ones.

@DJBiker - 17 rounds? Did not think of that... that would be good for the range at least... less loading.

@southchatham - according to the SW online catalog for my SKU, it's 10 rounds since this particular gun is California approved. They had another 9c with mag safety that held 12 rounds, but it had the internal lock, and I did not want the internal lock.

So it looks like no mods allowed for the 10-round mags. Thanks for the feedback guys.

The internal lock on the M&P hasn't been known to cause issues. Removal is relatively easy and a plug is available to fill the frame hole at nominal cost.

If that's the issue that's holding you back, the change involves maybe 15 minutes of bench time for the gunsmith.

I've gotta ask- if you live in Florida, why do you care if the piece is PRK approved?

I did not intend to buy a gun that conformed to CA State laws, but I wanted an M&P that did not have that goofy disclaimer on the slide if it did not have the mag safety. So this version also had the 10-round limit.

I've already purchased. Looking back, I suppose I could have gotten the version with the Internal Lock too, and then defeated the lock.
