Hi guys-

I've had an occasional issue with at least 25% of my magazines. Yes, I do number them, so I know it's not the same one with an issue. I'll load up 10-12 rounds in my magazine for shooting the following day. I'll grab a magazine and then notice that the rounds are not in the magazine properly, they have just dropped to the bottom of the mag like they have slipped through the spring. I'll take the mag apart and put it back together and things are fine.

I'd hate to run into this in the middle of a match. I've put a mag in my gun and the first round might fire, but the others are jumbled in the mag.

Some specifics: All mags came in SW packaging and have been in use by me less than a year. Purchased at 3 different suppliers.

If anyone has ideas, I would appreciate some help.

I'm also looking for a place to order new springs from. I might replace them if that's the issue. Thanks.

Am i hearing it right? There will be no spring pressure against the follower all of a sudden?

I shoot M&Ps in USPSA and have never had a problem with the magazines like you describe nor have I heard of a similar problem.

I'm waiting for it to happen again. Will send photo. If someone else also knows where to buy magazine springs, it would be appreciated.

Yea, i'm confused to. Interested to see pics next time OP goes to the range.

This is weird dude, in what way a round (or many) can pass thru the follower and the spring and get into the bottom of the magazine?

How on earth are they getting past the follower ?

Exactly. It's impossible (as in 100%) for the ammo to get past the follower (this is based on the assumption that the magazine was properly reassembled).

Did u get it figured out? I just got a new m&p and I had same issue,, like the spring pinches on itself,, having no tension,, or follower gets hung up in mag,,

S&W M&P 9mm magazine follower issue - left handed shooter

To Joe, and all involved in this thread:

This is not a shooter issue, this is a design flaw that will mainly effect lefty shooters. I am a (left handed) police officer and SWAT operator, and carry the M&P .45 on patrol, 9mm full size on SWAT, and 9mm compact off duty. I have encountered the same problem that you speak of in EVERY one of my 9mm magazines. The follower sticks in the portal 1/3 of the way down the mag, inducing a fail to feed malfunction. From what I have seen, this will only occur in a pistol with the mag release switched over to the right side of the pistol (for lefties). I have switched out springs and followers with no success. I have been in contact with S&W extensively, and there is a fix! Part #278320000, which is the gen 1 follower. Contact S&W and explain your issue, and they SHOULD send you gen 1 followers, free of charge. I have 6 on the way. I contacted S&W via email and corresponded with Don Degray ([email protected]), and he is aware of the issues and should be able to hook you up.

So how is it getting rounds to slip by the follower into the lower portion of mag?? I'd like to see that trick .

How on earth are they getting past the follower ?

It sounds like he is trying to say that the follower is sticking down and not being pushed up by the spring, thus leaving the cartridges to loosely jiggle around inside the tube, but on top of the follower.

Perhaps the original poster might wish to clarify.

Is it possible the springs were reinstalled backwards if the original poster disassembled the magazines?

Just a thought.

I did not see that the original poster said he had switched the magazine release to the right side of the pistol.

A mystery and I hope we find out a resolution.
