Let me start by saying I am already the proud owner of a Shield 40, which is my EDC. I am looking to get a .40 compact for some range time. I enjoy shooting my Shield, but wanted something for target shooting. The Shield is for SD, and it does what it was built for very well.
I am looking to buy either a M&P 40c or a Glock 23. I have done my research on both guns, and all the reviews are great for both guns. I have owned Glocks in the past, and I never had any issues with accuracy or reliability. I went to the LGS and held both guns in my hand, and the M&P 40c feels at home in my hand. I just heard so many great things about the Gen 4 Glock 23 by gun enthusiasts like Hickok45 on youtube.
I know this is a S&W forum, so try to put any bias aside. The M&P 40c is my Shield, but thicker and a little longer. If anyone can give me their personal experience with either gun it would be greatly appreciated.

I can't give you an opinion on the glock because I've never had one, but I do own a 40c. I like mine a lot, as it is versatile & can fill many roles. Before I got my Shield 40, it was my EDC. I use to pocket carry it in a Desantis pocket holster, which I now use for my Shield. I still carry it on occasion. If I have a cover garment(un-tucked shirt)it works fine on an Ed Hume JIT Belt Slide holster. I don't care for IWB. The 40c is a lot of fun at the range, & very accurate for so small a gun. Its more fun to shoot than the Shield, to me. Its easier for me to get a good grip on & feels better in the hand. When I carry it I use the ten round magazine with another for backup. When its doing nightstand duty it has a magazine for a full size(fifteen rounds)installed with an XGrip Extender sleeve. Hope this helps you!

I've owned both, and this probably won't help, but I don't think you can go wrong with either. They are both dependable, accurate guns. I carried both IWB on occasion, but neither was my primary carry gun. They are both very concealable. I liked the M&P 40c ergonomics a little better. I liked the Glock's trigger better, and I shot the Glock better. This is probably because I've had other Glocks for many years but the M&P 40c was my first experience with the M&P pistol.

I can't comment on the Glock because I've never shot a compact one, and I have a 9c not a 40c, but my 9c is one of the most accurate pistols I have ever fired.

To me the mp40c has a more comfortable feel in my hand than the glock 23. I love my mp40c and would buy it again over the glock 23 but both are outstanding guns. I'm not sure about glock but S&W has a life time warranty.

I had a Glock 23 but gave it to my son before WI had a concealed carry law & after I retired from armed security. It's a great gun. I now have a M&P 40C on order from a police supply store. That particular store doesn't handle Glocks anymore so I'm getting the M&P at a much better price than I can get a Glock. My son loves the Glock but since he was issued an M&P 40 from the Milwaukee PD he likes that a little better. He told me I should jump on the 40C & since the price is much better that's what I did.

At this time the only comparison I can give is G23s carry 13+1 rounds while the 40 Compact holds 10+1. The 40C has a lower bore axis so recoil should be a little lighter. The 40C is made in America but I've heard that Glock makes some of their firearms in the US as well. Police supply stores offer 3 mags & Trijicon night sights for M&Ps. Since the local store doesn't handle Glock anymore I don't know if that deal would be the same. G23s have been around for a long time & they've proven to be reliable but then again so have M&Ps. From everything I've hear S&W has better customer service. Accessories for both handguns should be about the same. Both are very popular. Newer manufactured M&Ps have improved triggers & some say they're a little better than Glocks. My son agrees with that. They both can be improved with APEX trigger kits. My son put over 3000 rounds of cheap Blazer through his M&P 40 at the academy without a problem but then again neither of us had problems with the G23 with an unknown round count & all kinds of ammo. I guess probably the same amount if not more.

You can't go wrong with either.

Both are very comparable and good guns. I would say since you are already familiar with the shield, the M&P feels better in your hand and S&W has the better customer service you should go with the M&P.

Only thing i can say is i dont like the grips on S&W M&Pc. Full size i like. Otherwise either one will be great

I traded my M&P 40c for a Glock 23G4. The M&P is a great . 40 S&W. However, for practical carry purposes the G23G4 carries just like the smith and gives me 3 more rounds. I like the way the Glock feels in my hand compared to the smith. It really is more about preference than which is objectively better.

I have a 40c, & carry it daily. I prefer it to the Shield. But it boils down to which feels better in your hand. However, if you go with the Glock, I would get the Gen 3. The 4 had too many problems. GARY

I'm another who has never owned a Glock but own many S&W's, mostly revolvers and 3rd gens with a couple of 1911's along with my 40c. I ordered an Apex kit for my 40c based on the advice here but after receiving it I was totally satisfied with the trigger and left it stock. I have shot Glocks and have nothing bad to say about them in general...they do what they are supposed to do...but they are butt ugly if that matters and the Smith feels better to me.

I would go S&W because of the warranty an the fact that it is American made. I think Glock does some assembly here but manufacturing is still Austria.

Both fine guns...U.S. made it the deal maker for me.:)

Shouldn't you be comparing a M&P40c to a G27 rather than a G23?

You can't go wrong with any of them, but I'd lean toward the M&P to be more consistent in trigger feel with your Shield.

I probably won't help you to decide but can tell you I own both the 40C and G23 and enjoy them equally. They are both accurate enough for my purposes and 100% reliable. Prior to my Shield I my G23 was my EDC. Since I had the G23 I didn't really need a 40C. To be honest I only got one because I had tried a friends and enjoyed shooting it.

If I had the Shield first I probably wouldn't have bought the G23 but stuck to the S&W line with the 40C. (Oh well ya can't have too many right?!?)

The bottom line is you really can't go wrong with either so don't fret about it too much. Go shoot them side by side and buy the one you like.

Let us know what you decide and how it works out for you.

I have both and like them both

The M&P40c feels better in my hand but I usually shoot my Glock 23 better. I've given up trying to figure out why.

Size wise, the M&P40c is between the G23, & G27. The G27 is smaller, & the G23 is larger. GARY

Thanks! I once handled a 9c, but wasn't comparing it to anything at the time (no point of reference). I assumed the M&P compacts were roughly the same size as a compact SW99. My SW99c is almost identical in size to a G27. They're within millimeters of each other.

I have a 23 and a FS m&p9... It is actually easier to carry the Smith than the Glock... Why would you go for the compact if you can get a full size?

This is a very important point.

I've watched guys try to say that the grip angle of the Glock is wrong many times. They use their prejudicial logic to try to convince me that the gun is just wrong. They are wrong to attempt that.

If you shoot the Glock better, who are we to say it's not the right gun for you?

Having said that, I'd love to go shooting with you pjstreng. I'm curious to see what "good shooting" is to you. ;)

I really appreciate all the feed back everyone has posted. I will definitely agree that the ergonomics of the M&P 40c is much better than the Glock 23. I was shocked to discover that my accuracy was better with the Glock 23. I just figured if a gun feels better in your hand, that you will tend to shoot better with that gun. The size of the M&P 40c lands somewhere between a Glock 27 and 23, which a member here pointed out. The Glock 27 is too similar in size to my Shield, which is why I chose the Glock 23. I'm looking to stay in the M&P line, since I already have the Shield. Made in the U.S., enough said! I will let you guys know what I get in the next couple weeks.
