M&P 40c or Glock 23

If you shoot lead, select m&p or you will need to buy an aftermarket barrel for $100+

I have both the 9c and the 40c and I will say this. I shoot both guns well with their respective compact mags, but I shoot both guns better when I substitute a full size mag with grip extender. Having that extra support against the heel of my hand just seems to stabilize the gun a bit more. My point is simply that you may shoot the G23 better because of the longer grip. Glock are great guns but the M&P's just fit my hand better. I think that with the reliability of all the big name poly guns, you'll be fine no matter which one you choose.

I vote for the Gen 4 G23. I like M&Ps but the G19 and G23 are a great combination of compact size, capacity and shootability. Gen 4s handle recoil better than ever.

I really appreciate all the feed back everyone has posted. I will definitely agree that the ergonomics of the M&P 40c is much better than the Glock 23. I was shocked to discover that my accuracy was better with the Glock 23. I just figured if a gun feels better in your hand, that you will tend to shoot better with that gun. The size of the M&P 40c lands somewhere between a Glock 27 and 23, which a member here pointed out. The Glock 27 is too similar in size to my Shield, which is why I chose the Glock 23. I'm looking to stay in the M&P line, since I already have the Shield. Made in the U.S., enough said! I will let you guys know what I get in the next couple weeks.
I don't own a Glock 23 but own G4G30 (as well as G4G19) & don't own a 40C but own a 9C. So, maybe my thoughts are skewed?

My G4G30 is an awesome shooter. I mean w/1-2 mags I shot a saucer (coffee cup size) size hole dead center my last range visit. IMO, NIB the Glock triggers are hard to beat, which facilitates great shooting. On the otherhand, my 9C w/Apex DCAEK w/ < 5lb trigger is also a great shooter. Yes, an additional $89 for the kit but well worth it considering the unbeatable ergonomics of the M&P's.

If, the 40C is a good hand fit for you & like the trigger, which I understand the production line have an improved trigger, or willing to do an Apex DCAEK mod, then buy a 40C.

... my 2 cents

I've owned both (in fact, traded my G23 for the M&P40c) and I did it because the G23 was almost the same size as my FS M&P45 and I wanted something much smaller. The G23 shoots fine and is accurate. But I don't like the hand grip feel compared to the M&P's and I didn't like the scissor trigger. It just didn't feel good to me. My M&P has a nice flat trigger for my pad of my finger to go on. That's the main reason I've done the M&P.

Otherwise, I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Definitely not fond of the Glock scissor trigger, which is a negative w/my XD40sc, and PPQ40 (w/PMR), too. BTW, NIB the Q is a mighty fine trigger axn.

I have a Gen 4 Glock 23, a Full size M&P 9mm (as well as a Shield 9mm).

Both are great guns and as others have said you can't go wrong with either - however - one thing to keep in mind if you plan to shoot lead is that Glock doesn't recommend you shoot it. I actually purchased a Lone Wolf 9mm barrel and spring - and some G19 mags so I can shoot lead 9mm out of my Glock 23. Just something to consider.

3 to 4 inch groups at 25 yards with the G23 vice 4 to 5 inch groups at 25 yards with the M&Pc.

15 yards and under there is not much difference between the two.

This is an urban legend and not true. Glock recommends using jacketed ammo, but cast is fine. Just like any gun, if you neglect it long enough it will have problems. If you clean the bore at least every 1K rounds or so, the lead won't be an issue.

That is good shooting in my book. I almost never shoot beyond 15 yards because I only use the gun for self defense.

Based on your report, I would say that you shoot the guns almost the same. A little work on trigger control and you'd gain that inch back with the M&P.

Have you shot them starting from the holster?

My best friend of over 40 years is a Glock nut.Owns about 6 of them.Among them is a 23.I have shot that gun a lot during our numerous range trips together.I liked it,shot it well and reasonably accurate with it.But no matter how I gripped it the gun was uncomfortable for me to shoot.I'm not recoil shy but the muzzle flip always seemed to rub a knuckle.Got a 40c about 3 or 4 years ago and to me it was a whole new ballgame, very comfortable and controllable.
Long story short,he likes the Smith better than his Glock and stated he would consider swapping that 23 for a 40c.I almost bought a 23 years ago but when the 40c came out and I held one and shot it I felt there was no need. But,I would still buy one if a great deal came along at the same time I had some extra cash.

Sold my Glock 23(gen 3) after shooting my new M & P 40C. Now like it even more since I got a 9mm barrel & mag from Smith. I can practice with 9mm and carry a 40.
But----personal preference should dictate!
