Bodyguard 380 no thumb safety no laser

I didn’t realize they’d been discontinued. The one I had developed the light strike problem they were known for so I got it fixed and sold it.

I think somewhere around 2014 they stopped selling the gen 1 Bodyguard, I had a 1st gen with laser and manual safety. I sold mine and bought an M&P Bodyguard (newer version) with no laser and I like it a lot. I didn't even know they a non-safety version. I would prefer it as the trigger is super stiff anyway.

I always wanted a bodyguard, liked them better than my LCP, but I didn't like the laser, and the originals always seemed to have a button issue.

I'd bought a newer one without laser, with safety last year when they were dirt cheap at PSA, I had no idea there was a no safety version until today(I guess I don't read the manuals because the cover page has both listed on it...

I googled this new find today (a local store had one and the no safety caught my eye). Surprisingly they were cheaper than most online places by quite a bit, not dirt cheap like last year.

I called Smith and Wesson to inquire of it being discontinued and the lady I spoke with couldn't tell me even when they archived it.

The date code on the box is 091418, so I assume it's September 14th, 2018. Which makes it older than my safety version.

I bought it...

I already see an issue with it. The magazine it was displayed with will not hold slide open. The spare magazine will, until I drop the slide release, then the spare magazine won't.

I popped the magazine in from my existing bodyguard and it functions as it should. I'm going to have to inspect and compare.

I'm a sucker for a good price on a Smith and Wesson, and this was the only smith they had left in stock. This place was picked over pretty good. Rifle/shotgun rack was maybe 1/3rd full. This time last year they had ~80 pistols in the cabinets. Not even 20 in there today.

I had no problem locating the non-safety, newer version of the M&P Bodyguard when they came out. So far, it has functioned flawlessly for me. It does what it was designed, and intended to do. No complaints here.

I learned something today. It is indeed no longer in production.
I would love to know why?
The shields are seen quite alot with the no thumb safety option. The new shield plus especially.

I guess I should enjoy my unicorn gun more now that it is discontinued.
I will take her out today, let her run, then give her a good cleaning.

I wonder how hard it would be (or if it is possible) to take the safety out... Mine has one...

I saw this model in the archive on Smith's website. When was it discontinued and why?

They're made in Mass it's probably a legal thing. Or they discontinued it to make the M&P bodyguard .380 line

I'm not sure how hard/possible it would be, but I'm guessing that it could be done. You would, however, need to purchase the 'filler block' to fill the void where the safety was once it's removed.

There are some videos on youtube, doesn't look too much harder than disassembling the frame of other m&p's. Putting it back together is a little different with the hammer, though.

And I think S&W won't sell you the plug to fill in where the safety bar used to be. Some people sell them online, though. Some are 3d printed. You need the plug because the the safety bar helped keep a pin in the housing block from moving around. The plug helps fill in that gap.

mine have safeties....i never use them. the safety lever is unobtrusive and a little difficult to engage. i would leave it as is.
