Another new product from S&W

Slightly baffled by the recent(ish?) 5.7 offerings from Ruger, PSA, and now S&W after basically only having FN's offerings for so long. I really liked shooting the 5.7, and I imagine this will be a fun shooter as well, but I'm curious to see how many people are actually looking for these.

This isn't something that I'm going to run down to the LGS and get in line to order. The 5.7 is a novelty round to me and when I saw it, I really just yawned. The new gas system is another story. It is definitely a first on a production handgun for S&W that I know of. I am looking at this new gun and wondering what their long game is. I find it hard to believe that they went to all this trouble engineering and patenting a new system for this cartridge. Maybe the future is a scaled up M&P in say, 44 Mag, like the Desert Eagle? Now that would get my attention.

I'll definitely take a look. FWIW, I perceive most misunderstand the round.

It's designed to tumble, not expand. 27 grain defense rounds are a compromise, I believe I think a little less likely for collateral damage.
It's reasonably priced too.

The patent said this was designed for low recoil impulse cartridges like the 5.7x28, 22 mag and 17 HMR. We will probably see it chambered in those rimfire cartridges but the gas system might not be suited for high recoil impulse cartridges.

If it will help with high recoil cartridges the obvious starting point is 10mm. A hot loaded 10mm really pushes the limits of what a pistol with a Browning style lockup can handle.

Several years ago I fired a FN P90 subgun. It was a hoot. No muzzle rise and it spit out those tiny bullets "rather quickly." I see the objective for the round in a gun like that.

However, I don't see the draw of other firearms chambered in the 5.7. Factory ammo cost is exorbitant. It isn't very reloadable due to case stretching and the polymer coating. Perhaps S&W has a solution of sorts with the gas gun.

Hopefully their marketing folks are on target. There must be money to be made with the new offering.

In regards to real world performance, the round has been proven to be similar to worthless.

I don't get it.

The P90s are fun, as a circus act.

I love it for the different operating system. I think the size of the chamber is a big obstacle to extending the gas-operated, rotating barrel layout to 9mm or more. The slide would have to grow accordingly to provide sufficient locking lug area.

Based on Palmetto State Pricing, $3.33 per round for Gold Dot.
Over $70 to fill one mag

Thanks for filling us in. I figured it would be a ridiculous price like most ammo today. Imagine the price buying from your local LGS!! Seems lately always coming out with a round we don't need especially that new .30 super. Think I will stick with my 9MM

Wondering who the target audience for this is. I can clearly see Sig's new "Rose" is aimed at women, but a full-size 5.7...I ain't ditching 9, 40 or 45 (or even 38 special) for a new (big) gun for carry and for range use, it might be fun, but more fun than any of my other guns (.32acp, .380, or 38S&W) I doubt it.

So who? LE?
