Bodyguard 2.0 guide rod broke

So I took my bodyguard 2.0 out to the range for the first time yesterday and love the way it shoots. After two magazines in, my guide rod tip of the recoil spring broke off. Needless to say I was at a loss for words and nothing like this has ever happened to me on the range. Has this happened to any other BG 2.0 owners? I plan on calling S&W to see what would be the solution to this. I attached photos to whoever what happened.

After reading several reviews of problems with the guide rod I have taken my bodyguard out of my carry rotation. I have not had guide rod trouble but I’d hate to have it happen should I need the gun in an emergency apparently This is a problem because Smith in one article said that they ordered a bunch of guide rides but they haven’t received them yet I will bet anything that they are re-doing the guide Rod in someway to make them stronger.

Read reviews; there have been others with guide rod problems similar to yours

Find that rather disheartening to say the least! One pictured looks metal but are they plastic? Thought they would be an improvement. Hanging onto my CS-9 for sure. No problems since 1999.

Not again!

Nine years ago, I started a thread about my semi-amusing adventures (in retrospect) trying to get a replacement for the defective guide rod/recoil spring assembly for my new 1.0 Shield 9. I hope S&W is able to address your problem much more rapidly than they were able to address mine. Fortunately these problems did not recur with the 2.0 Shields.

If you're interested, you can read that thread here:
Shield RSA one more time

Good Luck, and welcome to the Forum!

Oh wow! That is not good. So that is pressed in place! ***!?

I was so ready to buying this one over one of its competitors...

Quite a few pistols have guide rod assemblies that are not "one piece", i.e., not captured...

Does the pistol still function?

Cheers!

P.S. I'm "jus' askin'?", not trying to make any excuses...

Contacted S&W and they sent me a new recoil spring and guide rod assembly but haven’t taken it to the range yet. Ill post up to let you know how it goes and if I’ll be using this as a paperweight or in my ccw rotation.

So one guy has a defective part that breaks and all the simps are afraid to use the gun or are pretending they "were" going to buy one. Its a machined part and it can happen. To a gun, a toaster, a TV a car and on and on. There are many reviews and videos of torture testing the gun and it passed with flying colors. You get a replacement part, run a few hundred rounds through it and away you go.

I almost bought a BG 2.0 last weekend. I'm gonna hold off until May. No need for such a small carry gun in the fall and winter, anyway. I have heard some great things about the BG 2.0 but also some real negatives. I don't want to be a Beta tester.

I’ve had a Glock guid rod break. Replaced the assembly and I still shoot Glocks. Plastic breaks from time to time. It’s f’n plastic.

Mine has been fine for about 400 rounds. I figure if it happens to break in the middle of the one gunfight in my life...well...I was already having a really bad day.

To the OP. Hope your new spring takes care of the problem.

Replacement recoil spring broke also

S&W sent me a replacement recoil spring pretty quickly, after second range visit had the same issue. I will never carry this thing.

Whether it is the Hawthorne Effect or a real difference, I see far more Bodyguard complaints than Shield complaints. Both our Shields have been perfect.

Is it a problem with making something so small work reliably?

No.... a paper clip is smaller and it works reliably.

A computer chip is about the size of a fingernail.. it works reliably.

"Canik handguns are considered reliable due to a combination of factors including their high-quality manufacturing standards, robust design inspired by proven pistol platforms like the Walther P99, use of quality materials, and a focus on rigorous testing, all while offering a competitive price point, making them a popular choice for both civilian and military use."

Outside of patents, if MagGuts can offer a product that will change a factory Sig or S&W pistol mag from being nearly impossible to full load to a mag that can be loaded fully by hand, why can't the 5 top firearm manufacturers do the same and include those mags in the box? I will pay EXTRA!

You would think that certain technologies would be mature and foolproof by now. Guide rods for guns and car water pumps* are two that spring to mind, but it seems that S&W and Ford, respectively, have found ways to screw them up.

* It was a Ford water pump that killed my Jag XJ on a very lonely stretch of I-40 in AZ.:(
