Nikon P-223

I just picked up the nikon p300 for a 300blk I recently swapped for. I like the clarity. The bdc seems a little gimmicky. If I can settle on a single preferred round, I may get the calibrated elevation knob. I used to have an old scope with a calibrated yardage knob, it is very convenient.

I'm going to have to show my ignorance once again but what does a calibrated elevation knob do?

It replaces the knob on top with direct yardage marks.

Want 300 yards, dial it up, and the cross hairs are spot on. Takes the guess work out.

ETA: nikon calls it a custom turret. You can order it on the bottom of the spot on page.

And this would only work with one specific round?

Yes, a calibrated turret is for one specific round. However, it is calibrated for all magnifications, unlike the BDC where the yardage is dependent on the magnification. Leupold calls it the CDS (custom dial system). I have one on my 7mm mag and really like it. You can order different dials for as many different calibers, rounds, loads, etc.

Yes, it is single cartridge specific. I have to handload, 300blk ammo can run upwards of $2 a round. Once I find a preferred round, I will either get the custom turret, or add a couple of significant marks to the existing turret.

The data provided by the spot on program is magnification specific. Change your power, and all the spots in the reticle have different values. The turret adjustment eliminates that.

Thanks guys. I still have a lot to learn about long range shooting.

This is correct, but doesn't really cover the whole situation.

The reticle is only calibrated at one magnification IF it's mounted on the second focal plane. If it's a first focal plane scope, then it is calibrated at all magnifications.

The turrets are always the same movement no matter the magnification. Use the turrets to adjust the cross hairs to adjust for different yardages. A ballistics table can be made for the specific load you use.

This is why a mrad(mil) or MOA marked reticle is easier to use. They are specific and can be used to range targets and then develop hold overs much easier than reticles made for specific yardages. The scopes like the P-223 are made for those that aren't looking for absolute precision and don't want to do the math.

Command decision... returned the P223, getting the M-223 2x8 instead, Nikoplex reticle. Already have a Aimpoint Micro T1 and 3x, so don't really see the need for a 1-4x. And I figured for $50 difference since they are on sale, why not upgrade to the Monarch line over the Prostaff. I like the NikoPlex over the BDC, others prefer the BDC but I like what I like, as they say.
