Red dot appropriate for a $499 Sport II?
I’m looking for just the right red dot for my Sport II
I own a Aimpoint COMPM4s on my 6920, but that’s way more than I want to spend on my Sport II
I also own a three Truglo Tru-Brite red dots, but they are just not that durable in the brightness switch area, I’ve got issues with two of them.
At the moment it looks like a Holosun HS510c for $299 less 10% coupon may be just the answer. I’m looking for a large field of view like the Truglo.
Any other suggestions?

The Bushnell TRS-25 is pretty good for the cost it's what I use on most of my budget builds.

I understand not wanting to spend the money on a high end optic, but I don't agree if the thought is that the Sport is not worthy of having a high end optic.
I say decide on the optic based on your use. If it is going to be used in a defensive role, then you may want the features that are found in optics that are a higher price range than a Bushnell TRS-25... like longer battery life. An Aimpoint model would be a good choice.
If it is purely for range fun, the TRS-25 is hard to beat for price. I'm not familiar with the Holosun you are looking at, but for me, it is too close to price to an Aimpoint Pro, which is a proven, solid choice.

I couldn't agree more.
The number one mistake in the world of rifle equipment is going cheap on the sighting system. Getting a quality sight makes an inexpensive rifle a joy to shoot. Going cheap on the sight will make any rifle, regardless of the cost, not so fun to shoot.
You already have a high quality optic; Aimpoint Comp M4. One of the best in the field. You might consider the Aimpoint PRO. It's less money than the Comp M4, but still a very good optic.
I prefer to keep things in the US and lean toward the Trijicon MRO. It can be had on Amazon for ~$370. I personally like this better than the Comp M4.
If you just can't bring yourself to buy a really good optic, the Primary Arms SLx Advanced Push Button Microdot is a decent option. It has a 50k hour battery life so, turn it on and leave it on. The buttons can be operated with gloves. I have a slightly older version of this and it's a good little optic. For $130 it's a bargain. Not as durable as the others, but it will hold its zero. I ran a long term test on mine and it lasted 3.5 years before the battery actually died.

Best cheap red dot is the Bushnell TRS-25.
Best bargain out there, right now, is the Sig Romeo 5 at $120.

Bought this Vortex Optics Sparc II Red Dot Sight - 2 MOA for my 2nd Gen Sport about three are four years ago and it has been stellar at the range, if I remember right I paid about 160 bucks for it, money well spent!

I have a number of red dots on my competition pistols.
While I love the aimpoints and the c-mores, I cannot afford to equip all my firearms with the top notch red dots.
Personally, you have to make a choice between the reflex and the tube style sights. I find that the tube style sights are easier to zero and also are more durable when making adjustment for various ranges. Some of the reflexes are good but few economical reflex sights can handle frequent elevation adjustments that you get when competing at various ranges.
I also prefer the rotary brightness adjustments as opposed to the pushbutton brightness adjustments. with the pushbuttons, if you hold down the button a fraction too long while adjusting the brightness, the scope can and will shut down and take a few seconds to reset itself.
Anyways, Economic red dots:
Sig Romeo 5
Sig Sauer STS 081 this is a discontinued model but is available on EBAY, I like this a lot because the rotary adjustment dial is on the left hand side which I find more ergonomic for right hand shooters on both rifle and pistol.
Primary Arms
Nikon
I own at least one of all of the above. Some are pushbutton, some are rotary adjustments. I can recommend all of them.
I used to recommend the ultra dots but have been discouraged with the minor negative magnification problem that has recently surfaced with them .
Regards,
Crankster

I've never seen one that did this. You must have seen this "feature" on one of the really cheapo models. All the red dots I've seen with push buttons require both to be pressed, and held, to shut them off.
Any red dot worth having can be left on anyway.

I have 2 Sig Sauer Romeo 5s mounted on ARs, 2 Bushnell TRS-25s and two Primary Arms red dots. The Romeo 5 is my favorite, followed by the Primary Arms.

For what you're trying to do, it's hard to be a Primary Arms dot, Sig Romeo 5 or Holosun. I have all 3 and could easily recommend any of them. The newer ones have the shake awake feature which is awesome. Anything I get will have this going forward.
Or if you really want to change things up, check out a 1x6 LPVO. Near 1x at the low setting and can be used "similar" to a red dot but you also have magnification when you want it. For under $300, you can get into a nice budget scope (Primary Arms 1x6 shown below).

My Holosun HS510c arrived from Optics Planet today
OMG, the unobstructed field of view is amazing. My CompM4s doesn’t come close to this. From the YouTube reviews and abuse, it should hold up pretty well with great battery life too.
I was a little concerned about the optic width, but it’s just fine seeming very proportional to the Sport II. The Co witness is perfect, with the 2 MOA dot being at the tip of the front sight post (chevron for me from Blitzkrieg)

I like the Vortex Strikefire 2. Has both red and green dots. Purchased from PSA on sale with free shipping @$129
I’d buy another any day.

Another vote for the Aimpoint PRO. I've had mine for about 5
years and once zeroed the only thing I do is change the battery
every 2 to 2.5 years. That's about a year early from what the
manual from Aimpoint says, but mine is a house/self defense gun
and I want the assured reliability of it working when I pick it up.

I'm not seeing the logic in spending a lot of money for an optic to hang on a 3 MOA carbine. SS Romeo5 (2 MOA) should be all you need. Anything more is just lipstick on a pig. No, I'm not calling your rifle a pig, it's a figure of speech.

I have an Aimpoint PRO on my HM Defense carbine....which I love but on my last 2 builds went with the Primary Arms Advanced 30mm red dot....the full size tubes seem to work better for me and the PA has rotary controls which I prefer and will work going either direction from 0.......The PA advanced micro dot with rotary dial I just got for my new 10/22 does NOT have that feature which I mistakenly thought it did.................................................... .. .... .................................................. ....as you can see the PA 30mm RDS is an Aimpoint Comp 2 clone

I also like 30mm tubes with a 2MOA dot. I first tried a EOTech,
but didn't like the open arrangement and the VERY busy display.
This was about the time Aimpoint started selling the PRO to the public,
when first released it was LEO only.
I've been more than pleased with the Aimpoint PRO.
I have it mounted on a M&P AR-15OR with folded back up sights( co-witnessed).

I’ve played with the Holosun HS510c for a day now. Totally love it for my Sport II. And here is why
$270 from Optics Planet
20,000 hour battery life, BUT there is even shake awake technology
2 MOA dot and / or 65 MOA circle. A reticle for every need.
Flush and secure QD lever
Titanium hood to take the knocks and protect the glass.
Beautiful totally unobstructed 32 x 24 recital
I’m not taking this Sport II to war, just to Outlaw 3-Gun
Drive out with Sport II, case, red dot, KAC ambi safety, and center point sling (required by my club) and it’s a $1,000 total cost rig.
EDIT:
I’ve now had the HS510C to the outdoor range twice. This red dot is phenomenal!
Perfect Co witness, bright reticle, excellent QD Mount for the dollar (ok, it’s not a LaRue like on my CompM4s and ACOG RCO)
EXACTLY what I wanted for my Sport II. $270 well spent.

I'm happy with my Primary Arms 1x20 Compact Prism sight. $250 after tax from Amazon.
Even if the battery dies, the etched reticle can be used. No need to co witness sights.

I have both the Romeo 5 and the Holosun. Tried them on several in my collection. The Romeo 5 is now on my Sport II, with MagPul MBUS co-witness sights, and the Holosun is on my 617.

Bushnell recently came out with the TRS-26, a next-generation TRS-25. GREAT sight, 50K battery life, water/fog proof, very rugged, and has TWO torx mounting screws. Mount it with blue loctite on those screws and it's not coming loose. I was leaning towards the SIG Romeo until this one arrived. Price in the $120s.

Does ^^^ Bushnell have shake awake feature?
Sig Romeo 5 does have this and seems like a super nice feature. Especially for me who doesn’t use the AR a lot, but want it when I need it. And having it shut down would seem like it would save the batteries for ridiculous length of time.
For all practical purposes they are the same price.
Other than shake awake, what other features would be pros and coms of these to sites?

No, no shake awake. It just comes on when you turn the brightness knob, that big knob on the upper right. No big deal, for me. The TRS-26 has a larger lens, 26mm, compared with the Romeo's 20mm. It also has two mounting screws, something you don't see very often. I've always been antsy about sights that have just one little screw securing the entire thing. They're Torx screws, so apparently you can get them pretty snug, especially with some blue loctite.
The Romeo has a slightly smaller red dot - 2MOA, compared to the TRS26's 3MOA.
The Romeo has automatic brightness adjustment when it comes on. That may or may not be the brightness you want it.
Myself, I'd go with the TRS26 because of the wider tube and the more secure mounting, but it's a very close call.

Well if you have to touch the trs26 to turn it on and adjust brightness. Whats the difference if you MIGHT have to adjust the romeo IF it is not happen to be the right brightness. Have to adjust just like the TRS26.
I am leaning to the romeo 5XDR. More common AAA battery and dual reticle options.
What is the big advantage of a slightly larger tube in most situations?
I admit I am new to both AR and red dot sites.

I have a Aimpoint PRO on one of my AR's and a Vortex Strikefire 2 on my AR that I keep a dedicated 22 upper on.
Both work great. For the money, you can't beat a Aimpoint PRO.
I had a Vortex Strikefire 1 at first, but the power button was on the side and evey time I laid the rifle down it would turn on the scope.
