I just bought my first AR, the S&W Mag Pul Moe sl. I bought a Nikon 3x scope and would like to mount it with QD rings. Got some high rings that are to low. How are you mounting your scopes. Is my idea of mounting QD rings a bad one. Just thinking it would be good to take it off in a hurry if something went bad with the scope. Open sights work well. Thank you.

Not a bad idea at all. If you don't want to drop a ton of money on a 1 piece QD scope mount (like LaRue for example that could cost around $250.00), American Defense makes solid nice QD mounts. But, those are still around $180.00 or so. A real decent 1 piece QD mount by Atibal is a good option. Very solid, well crafted QD mount. The run just over $100.00 and are real nice. 30mm though, but, you can get 1" reducing sleeves for $5.00 from them.

That is a nice looking setup, thanks. Are there any less expensive setups that are fairly solid. I know "fairly solid" is not the term to use for defensive weapons as the term should be "solid".

Sure, there's whole bunch of 'less expensive' set-ups you can get. But, you're just throwing away your money. If there's one thing that I could tell anyone when looking for some type of optic for their firearm is; 'DON'T SKIMP AND BUY CHEAP STUFF!!' You're better off putting a $400 scope on a $150 rifle than putting a $150 scope on a $400 rifle. Same thing goes for rings/mounts. Once you put optics on your firearm, your firearm will perform only as well as the optic that's on it. Save your money until you can afford something decent. Like I said, the Antibal QD mount is real nice and for around $100.00 +/- it can't be beat. That's about as cheap as you're going to find a quality 1 piece QD scope mount that isn't your typical chi-com junk. As far as scopes go, plan on spending a MINIMUM of $200 for a so-so scope. The Tru-Glo Omnia 1-4 that is on the 15-22 in the above pic is one of those scopes. It's actually a quite a bit nicer than just 'so-so'. For about $230.00 delivered, it comes with a (non QD) 1 piece picatinny mount, lens covers, & throw lever. It has a real nice no frills illuminated reticle with hold-overs specific for AR platform rifles. If you don't have a lot of money to spend and want to scope your new rifle right now, that would be a real nice choice. other than that, save your money until you can afford something of higher quality. Good luck!

Let's see what I'm sporting...

The Nikon M-223 XR mount with the Nikon 1-4x. These are about $50 on Amazon. I have had a good experience with it, but it's not QD.

Aero Precision 30mm with a Hi-Lux 1-4x. These are about $75. A bit more robust, not QD.

Honestly my only QD optics are all reflex/red dot setups. I keep an Allen wrench in the Magpul grip of these two rifles and you can see the back ups on each one. Sure, not as quick as QD, but I don't expect to take off a scope in the heat of a gunfight no matter how it is mounted.

You can get a rock solid QD mount Larue for $140.

Just pick your ring size and go. You won't regret it!!!! Too pricey, save up and wait.

LT204 LaRue C.A.N. QD SPR Mount - LaRue Tactical

More affordable would be the Burris P.E.P.R in QD for about $80.

I had the Burris non QD version and replaced it with the LT204.

Get the better one first and it cost less. As they say... Buy once cry once.

Ok, I'm getting it. Glad I bought what I have on Amazon prime. What I have will go back and I will wait until I can do it right. Thanks to everyone for your input here. What do you guys think of the Nikon P-Tactical 3x33 scope? I do like the idea of a wide field of view and fixed power.

Nikon makes great scopes and have a couple of them on different rifles. Buckmaster 4.5-14x40SF on my Ruger 17HMR and a Monarch M223 4.5-16x42SF on my Remington VTR Predator .223 (pics attached of both). The only issue now is, Nikon is completely dropping their entire firearms optics products. Yep, they are getting out of the scope/optics game. So there's that to consider. The Nikon 3x33 P-Tactical is a decent scope. But, for your rifle, I would still go with some type of a 1-4x or 1-6/8x variable with illuminated reticle. That way, you can dial down for rapid CQB/steel type shooting, or, dial up the magnification for longer range precision/bulls-eye type stuff. A 1x to 4/6/8x variable magnification scope will just afford you a variety of different shooting styles if you decide to do something different than just shooting spots/cans/etc. at known distances.

Makes good sense. I can send the scope back also. So, Nikon is finished with scopes, to bad. I recently put a 3x9 on a CZ 22 bolt and it is great. Just as sharp as my Leupolds. Thanks Again. By the way, I am an old guy, lifelong shooter. The AR's have always interested me, glad I finally have one. Fun to shoot.

Yep. Always ran Leupold Vari-x IIIs 3.5-10s until I tried Nikon Monarchs quite a few years ago. Sold 2 Vari-x IIIs for more Monarchs, but still have 2 Vari-x IIIs since they are nice scopes. 1 on my Weatherby Mark V Accumark and 1 on my T/C Pro Hunter ML. Makes no sense to me why Nikon decided to bail. Glad to hear you finally got an AR. Lots of fun and very versatile for all different types of shooting disciplines. Lock and load!

Thanks again for the info. You guys are way ahead of me on AR's. So I'm sending back the Nikon and ordered a Bushnell AR Optics, 1-4x24 30mm. Am thinking about the Atibal 30mm TPM-LT Scope Mount w/QD. It has good words and is light. Will this setup get the objective lens above the MagPul flip up rear sight?

Atibal make a real nice QD scope mount. Very hard to beat for the price. I put one (T.P.M.) on my M&P 15-22. (See Post #2). You shouldn't have any issues with the ocular clearing the MBUS. If I didn't already have LaRue and American Defense QD mounts on a couple other AR's, I'd consider putting an Antibal QD mount on those, too. By the way, their optics ain't too shabby, either. ;)
