What are the stock ones made out of? Anyone have a plain black metal one laying around they want to get rid of?

They are plastic and Amazon lists several with designs on them.
Someone might give you one if they have replaced theirs with a special design version. Otherwise go to Amazon and pay $20 plus shipping.
Just as a matter of curiosity, how did you lose yours?
How does your gun work without the cover plate?
I would like to have another one for my SD9VE to cut down as a maintenance tool.

Never said I lost it. I want a blank metal one to send off for custom laser engraving

The only ones I've seen are plastic. The design is complex and not something S&W would make with metal.
If you find one in metal let us know.
Have a look at the designs on Amazon and then try to track down the manufacturer of those custom versions. Maybe you could get one made to your design.

Amazon seems to display more designs but are a couple of bucks more expensive than those on eBay.
I still haven't seen any that are metal. Maybe the OP can check with NDZ and ask them about metal.
