Just found this site - looks like a good one.

I've owned a SW9VE for a few years. I like that it's light and that it's simple. I don't like that it's DA only - and in my hands - that makes it not as accurate as I would like.

I just picked up a used 5906 - great shape (except for the grip). It's much heavier, and it's not as simple to operate, but I shoot much better in SA mode.

When buying the 5906, my intentions were to sell the SW9VE to offset the price. Is there any real reason to keep the SW9VE? Is there something I'm missing about it? There appear to be a lot of fans in the Sigma subforum - have I maybe not given it a fair chance? Because of money (lack of), I really should only keep one of them.

Opinions and/or advice appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. You will like it here. There is unlimited knowledge on many subjects. I bought a SW9VE when they were cheap with rebate and it led me to buy a 5906. I sold the sigma and shortly bought three more 3rd gen autos. I then bought another sigma. Go figure. I just like having it around. I trust it and it is the only one I keep out of the safe. If it gets stolen I will not lose much.

Hi and Welcome,

I have a 5903 and a SW40VE. While I like the 5903 to shoot at the range I would not depend on the gun for HD. I would choose the S&W40VE over the 5903 because I feel its safer and easier to operate under stress. I like double action guns anyway. I shoot mostly revolvers in DA. So my SW40VE does not bother me. Usually, I am pretty good shooting the Sigma at the range. While I don't recommend the Sigma as a target gun I still feel its a excellent HD/SD semi-auto and a excellent value to own. I think there is a place for the Sigma along with other semi-autos in a persons collection. I know I won't sell mine.

Good luck with your decision,
roaddog28

Thanks, deanodog and roaddog28. I wish I could keep both of them, but the most practical thing to do, from a financial standpoint, is to limit myself to one. Sounds like you both like the Sigmas enough. Maybe I shouldn't have jumped at the 5906, but I've seen some very good reviews on them - they seem to be well respected guns.

I think it would be worth your while to keep both..... as a backup is always handy-and both are very capable good quality pistols.

Thanks, mikeruns. Realistically, I shouldn't keep both (it's the money). I have a .38 to use if a second gun is needed - and shotguns in the house.

Out of the two guns, if I could only keep one, would the SW9VE or the 5906 the better choice?

Be careful Sean, this forum has a virus attached. It won't be long before it infects you with the desire to fill your gun cabinet with all kinds of S&W semi's. My first was a 5903 that is still one of my favorites. Then I stumbled upon this forum.......in the past 11 months, I've added a 908, 4513TSW, and a 439. If you can afford it, keep both and make room for more!!!

I would rather have the 5906, it has a proven track record, and I just plain don't like poly guns. Just my opinion.

I feel the same way. I don't like plastic guns amd I like the SA/DA having a hammer option. I also don't like the Glock look either.

I would also recommend keeping both, but if it is necessary to keep only one I would keep the 5906. Both are capable guns but the 5906 is step ahead in quality and durability.

While I've only shot the Sigmas and don't own one, I do have a few 5903's, which are the alloy version of the 5906 all stainless gun. I just like the feel of metal in my hand, and I've never had any kind of a failure with my 5903's. The 5903 is my usual carry. BTW, you can never have enough S&W's. It's a disease, but a welcome one, and it is contageous. -Ed

If I could only keep the one it would be the 5906. It is a much better choice being better built, all metal and having the DAO action as opposed to the Sigma's heavy trigger pull. However the actual sale price of a used Sigma is so low that it doesn't make sense to sell one unless you are desperate. With the past rebates most of them sold new in the $250 range and the used market just doesn't bring a high price for them.

Thanks, everyone. Sounds like the 5906 is a keeper. I haven't even looked to see what used Sigmas go for around here, but if they're not worth much, maybe I'll just keep it. I shouldn't, but maybe... I think you guys might be a bad influence...

sean, welcome to the forum.

I hope you can keep them both.

Stop by the sigma club and visit a while.

I go back and forth on the Sigmas. I had a first gen .40 "back in the day" and now I've got a 9mm SW. I don't have much pride of ownership in it, but it's not a bad little pistol.

I don't have a 5906, but I do have a 5946 that I just love. I think S&W really cracked the code on the 3d Gen automatics. (It's just a shame that it happened so late in the game, while the polymer revolution was cresting.)

Even if both were still in production, I'd vote to keep the 5906. Since the 3d Gens are out of production, I'd definitely vote to keep the 5906.

Well... I just shot my SW9VE again this afternoon. I'm still leaning toward keeping the 5906, but the long trigger pull on the Sigma didn't seem to be as bad as I remember. I was also shooting a Taurus DA-only .22 semi-auto; the trigger pull on that thing is a lot worse than the Sigma. Thanks, to everyone, for the advice and opinions. Guess I'll have to make a decision within a week or so.
