Howdy folks, I'm not new to S&W pistols but have just recently gotten into their compacts (669,908, and have a 3913TSW on the way). I'm very tempted to have some spurred hammers put on these sweethearts but I'm curious about hammerbite with the reduced tang - what's yall's experience with this? Oh, and for those of you who have given these guns real hammers - let's see those pics! :-)

Mine is the 4013 tactical that came with a bobbed hammer. I wanted a hammer so I bought one from a fellow member and installed it myself. It was really easy. Both the purchase and the install.

There is NO hammer bite if you hold it properly when ya shoot it. I personally wish that S&W had the mistakable double "click" when you thumb the hammer back. But they dont, its just a single click.

As for snaggin on clothes. Its ccccccold out here in MN so Ive only had it on with a jacket, and we dont have a printing clause in our carry law. It doesnt matter if it shows. In fact we can strap it to our leg and walk around like John Wayne in public and they isnt anything they can do about it. (note, we dont recommend this, but you can.)

Here are a before and after pics.

No Bite

Coffee357,

If I'd thought of coffee when picking my forum name I could have more completely named myself something like Coffee_guzzelingK22fan.:D

I replaced my 4516-1's hammer with a spurred one the year the gun was introduced. A lot of friends have fired it in the last 20 years and no one ever said a word about hammer bite. Additionally I've never heard or read any references to hammer bite from 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation autos. Changing hammers is easy. I like the convience and safer thumb cocking provided by a spur and will never switch mine back.

If your 669 has its original hammer it probably has an unneccessary 1/2 cock which 3rd gen. hammers do not have. You can use hammers with or without 1/2 cock notches in both 2nd and 3rd generation autos. S&W has replaced some 2nd Gen. autos' hammers with the newer hammers without the 1/2 cock.

Sorry, I don't have a camera so I can't post pictures.

Best Regards,
Gil

Here's a few photos of my 4516-1 with a full size hammer. I just shot a 300 round annual re-qualification course with it over the last two days and it had zero malfunctions and zero hammer bite. I like it as it's literally a mini-4506, and fits perfectly in a P229 holster. By the way, did I mention zero malfunctions? I couldn't say that about the more prevalent Glock pistols the other instructors were carrying. I know it's heavy and "outdated," but I'll never give up my 4516-1 for duty use.

2 Clicks?

That's a silly thing to pay attention to but I had to go get my 4516-1 and cock it listening for clicks. It has two but it has a 2nd generation hammer with a 1/2 cock notch. Its 1st click must be the sear dragging past the 1/2 cock notch and the 2nd the sear clicking into the full cock notch.

Yeah it may be, but if you hear it, you know what it is... its a psychological thing... I dont have the 1/2 cock notch. Just the full click.

Punisher102,

If you want to add that 2nd click I can ship you a never used 2nd gen. hammer with spur and 1/2 cock notch for $25. It has a long strut installed but you can switch struts. PM me if you're interested.

Thanks for the offer, but Im fine.

Spurred hammer for 4516-2 ?

Does anyone have the S&W p/n's for a spurred hammer for a 4516-2,
the "1/2 cock notch" style and the "full cock notch" style ?
Or what gun model to order from in the S&W parts listing?

There were only 2 types of pre-MIM spurred hammers in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen. autos, early ones with 1/2 cock notches and later ones without the 1/2 cock notch, although both types were made crome plated and blued. Only 1st gen. guns actually needed the 1/2 cock notch because its purpose is redundant to the firing pin lock saftey plungers in 2nd and 3rd gen. autos. Hammers with 1/2 cock notches were obsolete when 3rd gen. autos became common. If I remember correctly, the only change from 4516-1s to 4516-2s was the dash two's double recoil spring and dash twos were still pre-MIM but MIM hammers interchange with forged ones.

I hope this helps.

Looking at the both firearms and Smith & Wesson Web Site Parts Link, my 4516-2 has the Pre-MIM
P/N 107450000 - HAMMER ASSY, SPURLESS BLUE - OBSOLETE

It can probably be swapped out with the same hammer in my 4566, which is also Pre-MIM
P/N 262230000 - HAMMER ASS'Y, SPURRED

I Think?

Now, my 4536 has a MIM type and it's three years older than the 4516-2
P/N 204820000 HAMMER ASSY, SPURLESS, BLUE

TDA MIN and forged hammers interchange. I'm suprised that your 4536 has MIM parts. SCSW writes 4536s were only made in 1991 and I thought all models with the Sig type frame mounted decocker were discontinued by about 1994. Whether MIM or not hammers for guns with the frame mounted decocker do not interchange with hammers for TDA guns. I don't recall ever seeing a Sig type decocker S&W with a hammer spur.

When I sent my 3914TSW to S&W to have the rail removed, I also had them throw in a spurred hammer. They used the hammer from the 59xx/40xx/456x series, specifically part #262230000.

It was around $40 and I can't remember what they charged to put it in but they removed the rail for free and even paid return shipping.

I have had zero problems with hammer bite.

Nice! That's the Holy Grail for me. I've never actually seen a 3914tsw in person.

Last gun show here in the twin cities one vendor had a pair of salt and pepper 3914tsw's... BRAND NEW! and lemme tell ya,,, they looked SWEET!!! Unfortunately they dont make the 4013tsw in black, as I do not care for the 9mm.

It was the holy grail for me as well and still is even after a year of owning it.

I have a 3913 that I bought used. Someone had installed a spurred hammer. It is great for range and woods carrying.

However, I have a second and newer 3913 with stock spurless hammer that is much better for concealed carry under a carry garmet.

I got a pm a few weeks ago from Nyteman 44 about a spurred hammer for my 4516-1 and he hooked me up at a great price. This is a brand new never used 4506 spurred hammer and I love it.The compacts have a shorter grip tang but hammerbite should still not be an issue.
