Last weekend I took my newly acquired 4506 to the range and had some problems.

Range Trip Part I

Bottom line, I was getting many failures to extract (FTE) with Winchester White Box (WWB) 230 grain.

I took the pistol home, took out the extractor, cleaned out the extractor cutout, and examined the extractor. The extractor didn't look damaged in any way.

Today, I took the pistol back to the range. I shot 60 rounds of WWB and 200 rounds of Federal 230 grain target ammunition.

1. Fired 50 rounds of Federal No malfunctions of any kind. Done 5 rounds at a time.

2. Fired 60 rounds of WWB. I had 10 FTE. Done 5 rounds at a time.

3. Fired 150 rounds of Federal. Had no malfunctions of any kind. Fired 5 or 8 rounds at a time.

I used the same mag throughout firing.

I have never had any problems with WWB before, but I've only fired that in SIG P220 and Colt 1911s...but maybe the two boxes I used these last two weekends have some rounds at the high end of tolerance.

I was happy that the pistol fired with 100% reliability with the Federal. I'll have to try Remington UMC target ammo next to see how that works.

What do y'all say may be the problem. I believe it's the ammo

I have some new extractor springs on the way and will try some WWB when I get it installed. I also put the Hogues on it and will see how the pistol feels with those on next outing.

I did get a bunch of springs today and put in new recoil and main springs (I already did firing pin spring). That recoil spring was a monster to put in!!

It appears your gun does not like WWB. There are other brands that are as inexspensive to shoot. I'd be looking at them.

I had some fte problems with a 4506 I got used about a year ago, like you I saw no damage to the extractor. I contacted S&W and they sent me a extractor spring free and since installing it I have had no more problems. Jim.

Do not be surprised if it must go back to S&W for a new extractor if it used to be an LEO pistol. Those (some) guys love to dump rounds into chamber and slam the slide home. ='s the need for new extractors. Only fitted at the factory, as they will not sell them directly.

I have had 0 FTE issues with mine using WWB...or any other for that matter but mine was not a LEO piece and I only load from the mag.
