SD 9 P, 5906 Performance Center, information please
Looking for information.
It seems that it is based on 5906, product code 170053.
Some say there were only 150 of these.
But nothing reliable so far.
Does anyone know the meaning of the signs stamped on the frame, the barrel and the slide ? Is that the signature of the gunsmith at the Performance Center ?
Much grateful for any information.

I've had one for about 18 years and it's may be my favorite 9mm ...... With it's all steel construction it shoots like a .22. I use to shoot mine in IDPA until I found out how few of these were made....... a loss to be sure...... it still makes it to the range from time to time.
The "Model 6906 Stocking Dealer" compact (according to SCS&W p.370) date from 1994. The opinion on the number made seems to vary from about 100 to over 200. They were shipped with one 12 and one 15 rd mag w/ adapter.
Often wonder about "what it's worth" ........ I have no idea..... while it's production was short and not many were made........ it seems very few even know they exist........ despite its distinct barrel/look there's not even a photo in the SCS&W.
Off on a tangent........ I always thought that with it's distinct look it would show up someday as some "action hero's" custom gun...can you say "MI VII".. or see Bond pulling it out of the glove compartment of his Aston Martin........ to me it's way cooler looking than most...LOL Of course I always thought Bond should have upgraded to a 3914NL with Hogue wood grips!!!!!

It is a stainless steel frame, size of a 6906 ? but with longer barrel (4 1/4 instead of 3,5 inches).
I thought 6906 only came with alloy frames.
Its distinct barrel look makes it very dynamic, very elegant. In my opinion, it is esthetically superb.
If nobody took notice of that gun, then I don't expect it would be expensive. Until Bond pulls it out of his Aston Martin...
Glad we share the same taste : it very cool looking, refined and elitist.

Thanks Smithnut..... I missed your last post on that thread.......I had heard that there were only about 100 of the SD9s but a few years back "someone" on here said that based on a Serial# there had to be more than 100...... maybe counting all 3 calibers???? Nothing says that each caliber was assembled consecutively,,,,,,,, ??????
I believe it is the "only" 69xx series compact with a steel frame!!!
Well if Smithnut knows he probabily has the other 98......LOL

As I recall there were 204 SD40s' and 116 SD356s' and the SD9 was somewhere inbetween the two. The 356tsw compact was also on a 6900 SIZE frame that was steel, at least 800 of them.

And even more interesting is that all the 9mm guns from the PC are made on .40 cal frames.
So, would it technically be the 6900 frame or the Shorty Forty frame in steel???????

BAM-BAM,
Sorry, I was suggesting approx. 100 of each, not total for all three. As you can see, handgunner356 has provided a better estimate. It was my impression that certainly one or two were closer to ~100 based on some earlier info I received when looking into the 356 SD.

Thanks for your answers. Thanks for the factory flyer. Very nice since I just bought my SD9 and was impatient to know more.
I went to a gunsmith for a Tanfoglio Stock III, but I could not resist when I saw the Smith : a real jewel.
So you confirm that there were approximately 150 of them.
My SD9 is near brand new, should I feel guilty shooting it ? Do you recommend that I put it away in a safe ?

Never much of a .40 guy....had 9s and .45s.... before the .40s came out so never saw a need for a .40!
Handgunner , Thanks; the dealer I got mine from..... was my origional source ; that there were "about 100" made in each caliber.
SmithNut .....I always thought the Shorty Forty was based on the 6906 frame... didn't know the .40s frame was different...... is it beefer?
IIRC my PC SD9 fits my 6900 leather..... or was it the 5906 holsters...... must have been the 5906 because of the barrel length!
The SCS&W lists it as the "Model 6906 Stocking Dealer" compact.
Louislavu....... what did your SD-9 cost..if I might ask? It's a pretty small market....yours may set the " current market price" ......LOL
I'd say shoot it ....if it's "near brand new" but not ANIB/with Box.... as a range gun ...... it's built like a tank for a 9mm.

BAM-BAM,
The Shorty 40 and the PC 9mm's, as well as the SD guns are, at a high level, dimensionally comparable. I use holsters for the M69xx family for all. Having said that, the frame rails, I believe, are beefed up on the PC models as well as the TSW guns, making them stronger than standard production.
When I mentioned that the PC guns were .40 cal frames, this is with respect to the slot milled in the front of the mag well to not allow 40 cal mags to be inserted into 9mm guns (factory models only). The PC 9mm guns all use the same frames as the .40 guns in this regards.
I took a quick pic as an example for your reference.
The pic is of my SD .356TSW......
Note the slot milled in the front of the mag well, as well as the "dimple" on the 40 caliber mag shown in this pic. The .40 cal mag cannot be inserted in a standard production 9mm, but all PC guns share the same machining here, which is why I was calling them .40 frames.
FYI

Double stack .40 magazines will fit and function just fine with 9mm ammo in 9mm guns.

Do tell Tom,
I'm interested in learning... what models are you talking about.
I have tried with all my might, but I can't make a .40 cal magazine fit into a standard production 9mm gun (that is a Third Generation gun).
Please let me know when they changed.... Admittedly I've been out of the market for awhile, are you talking about the plastic guns of today?

SmithNut : my SD9 does have the slot milled in the front of the mag well, but no "dimple" on the 9 caliber mag. That is precious information, so now I know what model the SD9 is based on, a compact .40 (and not a lightened 5906).
Bam-Bam : I bought it at a gunsmith's and paid 950 $, which I consider is cheap, specially down here in France, where guns are a lot more expensive than in the States. It's worth the triple, if you ask me.
But of course, the french law makes it difficult to possess a fire arm. You can't keep a handgun if you don't shoot regularly at a range. So sooner or later, you have to sell your weapons. Or your children must sell them when you disappear, and they will have no feeling for the rarity of a gun.
Maybe that's the reason why it was cheap. Who would want to get rid of such a beauty at a very low price ?
Nobody mentioned the tiny little signs stamped on my gun, that you can see on the pictures : kind of an ace of spades into a circle, with flames coming out to the right. I have never seen another gun with these signs, that makes it precious to me.
Obviously there must be a name and a signification for these signs. Plus there is kind of a wide "H" and a "N☆" stamped on the barrel.
How's that for mystery ?

And on the mags, that wear the signature of the Performance Center, it is engraved : 9mm P.
So the "P" of "SD-9 P", must mean something.
Sure it means "Precious".
Have to buy myself an Aston Martin, just for the glove compartment, cause that's the only box to fit my gun...

To hazzard a guess on the "marks".... given that you are in France....my guess is that they are 'proof marks".... to show that the gun has been inspected or proof tested (pressure check) as part of the import process.
I've read posts that this is required in Germany (IIRC) so I'm guessing France might have the same.........would have to check but don't remember any proof markings on my US gun!

True guns are tested here, before they can go on the market, but I suppose not all of them, only one sample for each model (that's how I see it).
I have seen many U.S. guns here and they don't have any mark. Besides, the marks seem more cabalistic or artistic than bureaucratic.
I shall take a trip to Springfield one day, and find the key to the riddle.

As an aside to SmithNuts comments on the .40 frames....... my PC 6906 Compact( p.370 SCS&W) has the milled slot...... so I guess I can stick a 40cal mag in it....LOL
Also, don't these guns have the "box rails" (Now standard on the Tac. S&Ws??) which were heavier and tighter than the rails on the earlier 3 Gen guns?
FWIW..... this PC gun Ser.# VPC00xx has no model markings (ie.6906) at all....... just the PC logo on the right side and Ser.# on the left.
As another aside IIRC all my CZ (Czech) rifles are prooded marked....................

BAM-BAM,
Is your PC9 this one?
If so, I believe it's a second/later production run of these fine autos since the s/n prefix is VCP.... The serial number had me wondering... The first run of guns was serialized in the PCV prefix.... interesting.
As to the box rails, yes, the PC and TSW guns have "beefed up" rails... The PC flyers mention "oversized" rails, while the TSW brochures mention "full length rails with tighter tolerances for improved accuracy"....
FYI

That would be it......except;
mine has an ambi. safety...( the flier looks like a single sided safety to me/ pic is kind of dark)
a longer grip tang, and
checkered front strap (20LPI)
Slide is marked "Smith & Wesson' w/ "Springfield MA. U.S.A." below
I switched out the adjustable sights it came with for Novack night sights;
the VPC00xx Ser# is referenced in the SCS&W p370 bottom right.
Except for the Ser# this gun sounds more like the Shorty 9 MarkIIII/ or the PC9 Recon on page 368
My "back up" (bought used) is Ser# PCV04xx;
shorter tang
Novack night sights
Single sided safty
front strap is not checkered
no markings except the logo and Ser#
slide is marked "Smith& Wesson" no address
both guns are reverse two tones.......black over silver.
Funny thing....... I have the last 3 guns referenced on page 370 right column.

As for the mag slot, S&W originally made it so you could not switch 40/9 or 45/10 mags in the third generation guns. The 9 and 45 mags were wider and wouldn't go into 40 or 10 frames. The dimple on the thinner 40/10 mags kept them out of 9/45 frames.

So, just realized we missed one of the other "69xx" sized guns made with a steel frame.....
It's the first gen TSW .40, the M4056.... One of my personal favorite compact .40's... Love the Shorty 40, but really like the steel frame TSW model better, primarily since I prefer DAO actions for carry.

Rob,
All my 11 RD .40 caliber double stack mags ( Pc mags included) will fit and function 100 % when loaded with 9mm ammo and used in all my PC 9mm guns.Until recently they were also cheap $5.

Tom,
OK, so I think you are confirming what I said above then....
In reading my post, it confirms that the slot in the frames for Performance Center guns are there, whether or not they are 9mm or 40S&W. My post says that "standard production" 9mm guns do not have the slot, making it impossible to insert the 40 cal magazines into them. This whole discussion started when I mentioned that all the PC guns used the 40 caliber frames (with the slot that allows the 40 cal magazines to be inserted).
All S&W 40 cal Mags have the bump in the pic, they fit in any Third Gen PC auto, but they will not fit into Standard Factory 9mm guns.

I hear ya.... although it's been awhile since they that low up here in the NW....
Now, who knows, anything that holds more than 10 rounds is insane....
Finally.... S&W mags get some $$ respect...

So I learn that my SD-9 P is based on a 6906, but has a stainless steel frame instead of alloy, and has the slot milled in the front of the mag well like .40 cal frames. Kind of a hybrid isn't it ?
And now I learn that 5906 Performance Center aren't all stainless, there are some blued ones (or maybe only one at gandermountain.com).
You can't rely on anything nowadays, can you ?

Wow,
That's a DAO!!!!
We have not seen that model over here, must have been a special run for Wischo??
With a serial number prefix of WIS, I'm just guessing...
That would be high on my list as I like PC guns but prefer DAO for my carry/shooters, and afterall - they are all shooters....

It would be my guess that it is a later version, as with the Shorty 40 line, there are several versions, some with LPA adjustables, most with fixed sights, some black but most standard stainless, etc.
As you mention, yours has the ambi safety, the first models only had the single side safety.

Went to check the file and I bought the PC 6906 VPC 00xx in Aug. 1997. from a S&W Stocking Dealer........ from whom I got my SD9
Strange;
1. the VPCxxxx; PC guns were, per SCS&W built in 1995,
2. this gun has a 2 digit serial #..........and
3. it doesn't match much of the flier or the discription in SCS&W for the VPC gun.
I know that guns can sit in the S&W vaults or distribitors werehouses for months or years...............
Never can tell what S&W might come up with. I need to go look at the box!

Louis,
The markings are part of the import process they are proof marks I belive the N is probably a Z and the middle mark an I. I have 2 Performance center guns with identical markings but with D with crown and second D- for denmark and both have the coveted wischo stamped on the right side of frame

Cool pistol
I have this pistol!
The big reason I bought it was the unique looks. I like finding out new history about this pistol. Kind of like a provinence.
Thanks everyone!

Your pistol has been to Belgium, It has Belgium proof marks applied to guns that are not made in Belgium.
