I have an uncle of mine trying to sell a Smith & Wesson 539, he offered to sell it to me for $300. Is that a fair price for a that old of a gun? It is blued, not nickle and in good condition.

Great price on a fairly uncommon gun. If it has fixed sights you have something quite special. I've never personally seen a 539 only pic's of them. If/when you get it please post some pic's.

Excellent condition with box and everything should be around $525-550.
I would think good condition an no box would be closer to $400.

IMO $300 is a GREAT price so hand your uncle the $300 bucks and thank him for a great pistol !

BTW the more common version encountered is the 439 with an aluminum frame,
The 539 has the same upper slide assembly with a steel frame, the trade off is they are a bit heavier but far less were produced so S&W 9mm collectors are on the hunt for them and they are rising in value so take good care of it.
IMO Gun only in high condition is worth $600, LNIB probably closer to $950.

Respectfully, I cannot possibly see that. Just can't. I realize it's your opinion but I'd like to see something... anything somewhere that would lend credence to "LNIB closer to $950."

The most active single place on the globe that is a daily market for metal S&W pistols would be Gunbroker and in the last 10 months I have seen no examples of anything that would support even $750 on this one. Even the sellers who list pistols FAR over prices that they might actually sell at (these never sell but get relisted infinitely) don't list a 539 for that kind of money.

Dead nuts mint? Original box, mint end label on the box, papers, cleaning rod, mop, wax paper, assembly stickers on the pistol? That might snag $750 or even $800, but I can't see evidence of that either.

Thats why I dont like to give people value estimates.
The price ranges I gave were just my opinion and not supported by sales figures ,
A quick check of GB sales and I only see 3 listed and those are between $479 and $800 averaging $639 but none are LNIB

Two LNIB have sold recently, one for $841 and one for $780 , averaged together thats $810 so I was a little high on the LNIB price but close on the clean gun price no box.

I hear you. The two prices for recently sold definitely surprise me... I seems I may have also undervalued it.

It does appear as though the guns we love the most are on the upswing. Nostalgia is certainly a driving force in any market.

OK just spoke to my uncle and since I don't have the cash right now today, he agreed to not sale it and to hold it back for me until I can save up the cash to then get it from him, which will probably be 3-4 months from now.

Just had my uncle send me pics of it to my phone, hear that are. No box or accessories, 1 mag only and the holster, that's it.

That one looks to be close to the end of the 539 run in late 1982 or early 1983. S&W stopped making them with the introdution of the stainless 639. That one has the long extractor vs the short shotgun style extractor found on most of the 539`s and 559`s.
I have never seen one with the square trigger guard. That one has the on slide red dot and no lanyard loop.
Get up the $300 and buy it. Nice rugged 9mm.

Are you sure its a 539 and not a 439?
I think you will find it is a 439. If it is it is more mid `80s mfg. Just my guess.

I tried to zoom in on the pic of the left side of the pistol and the first number in the Model# sure looks like a "4" to me although the enlarged pic is still quite blurry.

He says its a 539 and I'm assuming he knows what he's talking about. The only thing I know about it is he said he bought it used at a gun show about 15 years ago for $350.

Does look more like a 439 than a 539 IMO but either way still a bargain at $300.
Just a much better bargain if it is a 539 as there were far less made.

I'm fairly certain the 539 ceased production prior to the advent of the square trigger guard (and perhaps even the Phillips head ambi lever). I would still pay $300 for a 439.

got my scsw in front of me...

The 539 wasnt made with a square triggerguard.
the 439 early models had round guards, later had square.

I think Jimbo is right its a 439 except like he pointed out it has no lanyard loop. Serial# prefix should be "A"

Nice gun! Good price.

Since I don't have the gun in my possession and likely won't until I come up with the $300, since we don't live that close to each other. However once I come up with the $300 and go to meet him with it, I'll know myself what the serial is and what it says for model number.

The frame looks like black anodized aluminum and the model number looks like 439, when you blow up the pic.

I'd be all over it at that price.

I do not have the gun yet as I'm still saving up the money, although I am still going to buy it. When I said it was a model 539, that because that is what my father told me that his brother told him. I seen my uncle last night and had him text me the model number and serial number, which he did today, and it is indeed a model 439.

Either way it`s a good deal, in fact a bargain. It looks to be in excellent condition. Lighter in weight than the steel framed 539 but still a great shooter.
When you get it let us know how it shoots.
