I've been offered a S&W 539 s/n A765xxx for less than the cost of a middle-of-the-road 1911. It's been fired but not much and it's in excellent (99%) condition.

How rare are they? I did a little research but don't have the S&W book (I really need to get one...) and saw comments about low production numbers. Are they a sought after piece & would anyone hazard a guess on the value based on my info?

I've purchased 9 handguns since Dec 1st ranging from a mint 1954 Polish Tokarev to a 9mm Nighthawk Custom 1911 so I'm beginning to see the end of my allowance approaching & need to make the right choices. I already have a BNIB w/ papers alloy 39, a 99% nickel plated 59 (no box) and the 539 is also sans box.

I looked at GB & there's one with a box, etc for $625 with two days left & zero bids but it's not as nice as what I'm looking at. They claim there's is 98%.

Thanks!!

I wished I had an allowance the size of yours !

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd Edition, the model 539 was produced from 1980 - 1983 with a total of 8159 pistols produced. As to the value, it states that a ANIB or like new would be worth about $600 and one in excellent condition about $410. These amounts are of course just a guide and this edition of the S&&W Standard Catalog is a few years old. What it comes down to is the gun is worth what you are willing to pay for it. As long as you are happy with the purchase, that's all that matters.
I saw the listing on the auction site you mentioned and that particular 539 appears to be in great shape

Thanks for the info. I've bought a number of items from him & they've always turned out to be very high quality. I just mailed him another money order today so I'll be receiving three items before long. I've seen photos of just part of his collection and he has things I'd never even HEARD of! He owns literally hundreds of handguns and I want him to adopt me but I think I'll pass. I'm hunting for an Argentine FN built Hi Power Detective & think there's one on the horizon.
