I'm coming near to the end of my shooting road, and I wanted to add a 1911 shooter to my other S&W revolvers for carry and HD. I might want to carry the pistol in .45ACP, and so the possible choice of scandium in the construction of the pistol. My usual degenerative back stuff is now complicated with metastatic prostate cancer with bone mets to my back and pelvis, and I won't quit shooting until it's unsafe or too difficult for me to do.

All this to say that I was wondering what you all think of the S&W 1911's...I've been considering Sig and some other brands, and my main reason for wanting one is to shoot it at the range, and brag to my bride that I'm not shooting squirrels out of the trees anymore...that I'm getting accurate enough to hit the paper.

By the way, the PC revolvers that I've been buying lately are a lot better in the QC department than the ones of just 3 years ago. I have a 625 PC that has the smoothest trigger I've ever had on a revolver, and the 686+PC isn't far behind it.

Any opinions based on experience would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve got an early model that I bought used a couple of years ago. Unknown total round count, but I’ve put close to 1K rounds through it since I’ve had it. Mostly my own reloads and no excessive wear from them. Accuracy is better than I can shoot, but I’ve never tried benchresting it to see how good it really is. Great carry 1911 with the reduced weight. I put a techniclip on it and carry it IWB with no holster in condition two(I usually do this when I just grab it to go check a “bump in the night”), but I carry it condition 1 when in a holster. I have an Aliengear IWB that doesn’t interfere with the clip when I carry it holstered.

My 1911sc

Here is mine that I purchased brand new in 2015. I have several thousand rounds through it and the only problem I had was that the plunger tube broke off. Instead of sending it back to S&W, I purchased the staking tool and a heavy duty Harrison Design plunger tube and installed it myself. I also added a flat wire recoil spring and a small radius firing pin stop. If you do get it, I would recommend that you keep the frame rails greased well. All and all, the sc makes an excellent range pistol and CCW choice.

That is a Very Beautiful gun and those grips look great on it as well.

sonofthebeach,

Sorry to hear about your back and the bitch that is prostate cancer. I too have a degenerative back condition and have had prostate cancer. My cancer was found at age 52. I had surgery and radiation. It's been six years and my PSA is still 0. I was getting tested because my dad died of metastatic prostate cancer.

I wish you the best and my prayers are with you.

I have a S&W 1911PD 108296 that came with the factory laser grips. I've got around 3000 rounds through it so far. I just had to have the barrel replaced due to a squib.

It's the most accurate Commander sized pistol I've shot, and I've own/owned more than half a dozen.

With my target load, 4.2 gr WST under a 210 gr SWC I can put 100 rounds inside a paper plate at 15 yards. That's doing rapid fire and timing my splits. It's one large ragged hole in the middle of the plate.

I shoot defensive pistol matches at my gun club and this is one of the 1911 pistols in my rotation.

I shoot my S&W 1911 scandium commander in IDPA because my boy prefers to shoot my all-steel SW1911.

Many hundreds of rounds, not a bobble.

Condolences on your prostate cancer. My dad(1) & grandpa also had that and I guess I am in line. I get a physical every year to include a PSA.

(1) Surgery, full recovery
(2) No surgery, meds held it back until stroke killed him

Here's mine and it's my favorite LW to carry, the only "inherent" issues they have is the plunger tube assembly coming unstaked, but S&W covers it for free if it happens. Mine did after about 300-400 rounds through it.
This gun is hands down the MOST underrated gun on the market with the details and extras it comes with.
On par with a 2-3k dollar gun with all the extras and performance, so they're a real bargain at $1400 retail, but can be had for around $1000 with luck, I paid $950 for mine "gently used" from my LGS.

I have the two-tone 1911Sc. It's a carrier, not a shooter so I can't comment on durability but it is accurate. Most importantly since the rear sight cannot be adjusted for elevation, the gun shoots both Federal 185-grain JHP rounds and my 185-grain lead semi-wadcutter target rounds to the same point of impact, right in the center of the bull at 50 feet.
