Just posted last week about my "new-to-me" Model 39-2. Being my first Smith & Wesson semi, I just had to see how it stood up to my BHP that had been my favorite semi in 9mm. I tried to wait for a spare mag to get to me.....but wind and weather (not to mention the wife) were in alignment yesterday so I spent some time at the indoor range where I am a Member and could get a good lane, target well lit (a necessity with my eyes).

So.....the guns: S&W Model 39-2 (circa 1977), 8 round single stack mag. This gun has adjustable sights and one poster last week said my photos of the muzzle may be indicative that this gun was never fired. Well....not now!

The Browning Hi-Power (circa 1988) is a 13 round double stack mag with fixed GI 1911 style sights

Yesterday I went through a pack and a half of dirty bird splatter targets all at 10 yards (my maximum indoors these days). Ammo was Winchester white box, 124 grain. Of course, indoor, so no wind, very good light, no humidity, my favorite lane (Bay 1, lane 1) right up against the wall....no brass or mag dump distractions anywhere around.

Below pics represent the 2 best for each gun and blame everything you see wrong on me...not either gun! I've got to say for me, the 39 is the better gun for me, sights have it all over the BHP, but the trigger is better on the BHP, although the reset of the 39 is something you have to experience for yourself to appreciate.

All in all...........I really like the 39, I am keeping the BHP and it will continue to get exercise, but if I had to carry for some reason a 9mm semi...it would be the 39.

I would not feel outgunned with either pistol on my hip.

Looks like both are winners. I find the 39-2 in my holster more often than my HiPowers these days. Slimmer and lighter, and I don’t miss the 4 extra rounds.

Looks like you have a couple of keepers. I think the 39-2 and Browning Hi Power are classics. I had a Hi Power for a few years but sold it to a Friend. I still kind of regret selling the BHP. Having learned to shoot double action revolvers and DA/SA pistols I learned to use the 39-2/439 effectively. I never saw the long DA pull as a detriment on the design on the 39. Some other DA/SA pistols did not have near as good DA pull as the S&W’s.

Thanks for posting cmansguns!

I have handled a number of Hi-Powers and many 39's and 39-2 pistols. I simply cannot imagine a stock, unaltered Hi-Power trigger pull, break, feel, and especially the vague rest being nearly as good as the single action trigger break on the Smith & Wesson 39/39-2.

The 2nd Gen 439/539/639 and the mini 469/669 have worse triggers than the 39/39-2 by far, but in a head to head showdown of unaltered pistols, I can't fathom a stock, unaltered Hi-Power trigger being nearly as nice as a 39/39-2!

I will say for sure that the two pistols are a pair of the most historically significant handguns in man's history on this planet. And for as much as we all love the Smith & Wesson, the Hi-Power has won that particular showdown. Former military issue at all corners of the globe, a rich history of service where the Smith & Wesson's significance is largely in the United States.

I need to get a packable 39 or 39-2 to "stunt double" my pre-39. I don't CCW that one...
