I have both a 3914DAO and a 5946 with NYPD marked on box end. My understanding is NYPD officers purchased their own guns from an Approved Firearms "List". So is there any way to determine which weapons were Approved for NYPD officers as a function of date. Specifically I am interested in when these pistols were added to the "List" and when they were removed from the "List" - would also be interested in seeing a copy or copies of the "List". Thanks to all NYPD officers as well as all Law Enforcement officers. Best, Ed

I carried the 5946 while with the NYPD. I think 9mm and the 5946 were approved in 1993. The small 9mm off duty guns may have been approved around 1995-1996. I am not sure on that one. The first approved 9mm guns for the NYPD were the S&W 5926 the Sig p226 and the Glock 19. I remember seeing a few officers carrying Ruger 95’s I think but they were never were fully approved when the NYPD switched over. The original off duty 9mm were the Kahr k9, sig 239 and I think a dao version of the 3913 and maybe a smaller Glock. I couldn’t afford the off duty 9mm and I liked carrying my S&W model 640 as an off-duty and backup gun. It’s all a blur so all of this may not be 100% accurate

That’s pretty accurate. The Smith 3914 and 3953 were approved for off duty in 1995, along with the Kahr K9, the Glock 26, and the Beretta Mini Cougar. Maybe it was the 908 in stainless? I know one was stainless and one was black. The switch to 9MM as standard was in the August 1993 class. The 5946, Glock 19, and Sig 226 were only ones authorized. They were purchased from the Equipment Section. There’s Ruger pistols were the P95 I think. They were part of the pilot program while the job considered 9MM. Ruger never got the contract but those officers who were chosen to carry them were allowed to keep them. The 5946 went away probably around 2006 or so. But guys still carry them if they had them before they went away.

The Kahr K9 was unauthorized probably around 2003. Issues with malfunctions due to the job messing with the trigger. The Cougar went before the Kahr I believe no real reason I’m aware of. It was the most expensive and wasn’t very popular.

I'll ask my now retired NYPD cousin. He was carrying a 3914DAO through the beginning of 2020 in plainclothes.

IIRC, the 3914DAO was still on the approved list through 2018. I believe it is "grandfathered in" still, as an off duty/plainclothes carry. Regards 18DAI

Found separate reference to authorized use of semi-automatic 9mm in 1993 which specifically includes the 5946 with the P226 and G17.

Also found reference to August 2018 as end of grandfathered revolvers and presumably other guns not included below.

A recent interdepartmental memo from the NYPD Commissioner states that revolvers and their equipment will be “discontinued for service use” after August 31, 2018. Officers will be required to go through a 3-day transition course to semi-automatic pistols. After completion of the course, they will have three semi-automatics to choose from: Glock 17 Gen4, Glock 19 Gen4, or the Sig Sauer P226 DAO

I spoke to my retired cousin and made an inquiry on another board as well.

If a member of the service was originally approved and qualified on the 3914DAO, they can still carry it - on or off duty. New officers are not allowed to choose a 3914DAO.

Production seems to have ceased in early 2016 with many units still "in the pipeline" and readily available through 2017.

My cousin said he has seen some LNIB examples for sale, recently, in a few local gunshops on Long Island. Hope this helps. Regards 18DAI

Just a few months ago, my agency had several out-of-state laterals testing for the dept. One of them is an NYPD officer. (Can’t blame him for wanting to leave.).

Anyway, he shot the AZPOST qualification with a 5946. All of us range dudes were a bit shocked to see that old GEN 3 S&W was a bit of an under statement. I will say though, the gun chugged along just fine, despite her age.

The Glock 19 is the standard issue for the New York City Police Department. But, they still allow the Sig’s and Smith and Wesson’s as long as they’re DAO. No wheelguns as primary guns. They did that a few years ago.

FYSA NYPD dosen't issue handguns to it's officers. It has a list of Authorized Handguns that it's officers are allowed to purchase. Meaning that the hand gun belongs to the officer and not the City.

The NYPD Patrol Guide currently authorizes the Glock 19, Glock 17 and the the SIG P226 DAO. As mentioned above, officers who already had authorized S&W 5946 can still carry them. New Officers cannot.
