Hi guys,

this is a M5903 that I finished a couple of weeks ago. Pistol belongs to a LE officer that contacted me through social media. I will try to finish the thread in a couple of post...

started with a slide in so-so condition, the rear sight windage screw was "loose"...

took it apart with no issues

it was really dirty...:D

"fixed" the rear sight and retouched it...

cleaned everything in the ultrasonic tank...

prepared the slide for the cut...

to the milling machine...

one side done...

then the other...

cleaned some dings with a stone...

cleaned all the machining marks...

blasted to check for imperfections...

some more dye (yes, I was doing two at the same time...)

milling front serrations... (BMCM has a fantastic tutorial on how to do this...)

Milling part done...

More to come...

Beautiful work guzz!!!

I have had a few slides guzz had worked his magic on…pictures do not do this man's work justice!!

And on the extractor pin removal..
soak the extractor pin in some oil and let soak. Take one of your bent 1/16" punches and cut off bent part to make a short stout starter punch. Then Use the starter punch to drive out.Once pin starts to move..spray with some oil real quick and then drive out with your regular 1/16" punch.
After destroying,bending,braking,reprofiling,rebending..lots of curse words later I ordered the Starett brand 1/16" punches are best I've found..came highly recommended from guzz!! Once you bend one..they make the best starter punch as well. These are now the only punches I buy.

After the milling was done, took care of some details...

guide rod was dull and dinged..

so I polished...

looks better...

owner wanted a single side safety...so, found a candidate for a "swap", also took one step off...

blasted the safety...

took the frame appart, cleaned it well. Did a complete action job. Greased, oiled and re-assembled the frame.

brushed the sides, cleaned everything and started to put it back together...

slide was ready...

more to come...

Thanks to Makman90 for the tips and Guzzi for the tutorial with pictures via Text Message.

The punches came today and having nothing to do, I gave it a try.

Yes, penetrating oil helps a lot.

The starter and pin punches did their job and the pin came out. Since this is a 908 slide that I bought for parts and practice, there was no risk of bunging a working gun up. I cleaned the channel for the extractor, put the parts back in and drove the pin in.

A couple of lessons learned.

1) It's better to know the right way before you start.

2) If I ever need to replace an extractor I'll either send it back to the factory or a gunsmith familiar with 3rd Gens.

3) I ever can't do that, I'll get a new extractor pin along with the extractor.

4) As it happens, the pin punch set I have was made by Pro Mag. I bought it years ago, before my experiences with their magazines. The pin punches are of the same quality.

That's all. It was fun to learn and I have couple of nice pin punches for other gun work that I might have to do from time to time.

Nice work.

Dumb question: Do you use a stiffer spring because you reduced the mass of the slide?
