Looking at a Model 539 nickel two magazines no box. Gun looks to be in excellent condition. Owner asking $750. What are these worth?

You know what? I think I'd do it. People would happily pay that for a nickel Model 39-2, and they're a whole lot easier to find. Maybe he can throw in a box or two of ammo to sweeten the pot.
My .02 worth, and to those less inclined I get it; its a second gen model and maybe not silky smooth like the 39, but still...

Nickel S&W 539

I saw that gun, but it’s too far away from me. At 700 I would do it if it were closer to me. I have a 39-2 nickel that this would pair up nicely with. When are you going to see another of these for less.

In today's market, given the relative scarcity of the Model 539, especially in nickel plate, I'd say even without the box and docs, $700 would be a reasonable price. If you take the $575 price quoted above as being in the 4th edition SCSW, published in 2016, adjust for inflation, you get $713.

I am bummed. Traded a really nice piece just a month or so ago. It did not have wood grips but I now wish I would have offered it here on the forum.

I sold a nickel 539 several years ago as I found it too heavy. I recently acquired a nickel 39-2 and am much happier with it.

Hey John, thanks. So steel frame, rear sight change and improved FP safety.
Later production 2nd gen 9mm pistols also introduced the hooked trigger guard. Many 2nd gen full size pistols also had a much shorter extractor that required no tools for field replacement. This was by request of the U.S. Army during the XM9 pistol trials.

When I did my early research into which one single stack S&W auto pistol I would assemble to scratch my itch. I didn’t like the wrap around grip and what it entailed for the Gen 3 series, and wanted to avoid the aluminum alloy that predominantly made up the first generation, so PRESTO! it was Gen 2 for me. I didn’t even see a 539 during my search (blue or nickel) because they seem to be pretty thin on the ground, but 639s were out there, so that’s what was chosen as the basis for my FrankenSmith. I may be alone in my belief, but IMHO the Gen 2 is the pick of the litter. Don’t try to confuse me with the facts! ;)

We could start an entire thread on extractors. All 2nd gen models, 439 and 539 both blue and nickel and the stainless steel model 639 were available with two different types of extractors. The first type is identical to the Model 39-2 extractor and is more common with the 439 and 639 models but can be found on some 539's. The short stubby extractor is more common with the 539 but can be found on both the 439 and 639 models. Of all the above options, the short stubby extractor is the hardest to find on the 639.
