What is the best option for an affordable alternative to open sights. Which type and model do you reccommend?

Greetings!
Congratulations on your purchase. The 22a is a great shooting pistol. I wasn't thrilled with the open sights. Sight windoe too big. Even though it wasn't supposed to work, I purchased the cheapo BSA red dot from Wal mart. It's canted a bit but I sighted at somewhere between 25-30 yards. The biggest problem I had was switching out the display battery cover. I ended up using the copper band for the display cover with the permanent cover. Haven't looked back. Some day I might upgrade but that probably won't be until the battery goes dead. Then the problem might solve itself. It really works quite well. $28 if I recall. 3-4000 rounds so far.

I put a Tasco Accudot on mine and it's worked great! I've had no problems after about 3000 rounds.

I have a P22 with the Viridian Green laser and it is fun as a fast plinker accurate combo that fits on the under rail. For a top rail your decision is what tube size red dot you want. You can't go wrong with an Ultra Dot 1" @ $100 or if you can spring for the $170 the Burris Fast Fire has a small foot print that doesn't over power the top of your pistol. Both will always put a smile on your face at the range/hunting. Regards

I bought a Simmions Red Dot scope from Midway for ~$30. It works great for steelplate shooting @ 50 yards and it's a lot easier for older eyes...

I emailed S&W and they told me a Tasco Red Dot will not fit the 22A. They said I need Weaver ring mount. Can anyone give info as to what inexpensive Red Dot has worked on their 22 A-1?

I have a Bushnell red/green dot and it fits and works excellent, I will try and post a pic when I get home this evening

I picked up a BSA fixed 2X (was going to do a Red dot, but the BSA was dirt cheap) and I love it. I can nearly shoot the center out of a playing card at 25 yards with it. They are a nice alternative to the red dot if that is your thing, either way you can't go wrong, the 22A is a great gun.

I have a Bushnell "Trophy" red dot on mine and I really like it. It's my understanding that the BSA ones from Walmart can be easily modified with a little grinding to sit flat. I have one of those on another gun and it works just fine.

I have a 22A too and I need something that will work with these old eyes. The idea of a red-dot seems excellent.

But how are you guys mounting them???

Seems to me that a standard Weaver mount is a lot narrower than the ~7/8in rail on the top of my 22A.

I bought a Tasco 42mm at WallyWorld today that's not anywhere close to fitting as far as i can tell. (It's going back tomorrow because the dot is far from being a 'dot').

What am I missing???

TIA.

that particular optic has to be modified to work on a 22A. You want something that mounts with standard scope rings and you'll be fine.
