I just obtained a 10-8 old sherriff revolver, seems to be double action only, although it has a spur, can it be returned to double / single? what's involved

Thanks for any info/ help.

You will need to obtain a new hammer; the existing one has been modified to DAO.

Any gunsmith can do it for you. Just a parts swap. Shouldn't be expensive.

Thanks for your quick responces, Helps alot.

The Sheriffs Dept that issued it simply removed the hammer and filed the SA notch off , leaving the spur because it is needless labor to remove it and also it will still fit in thumb break holsters made for spurred revolvers.

Just a thought but a new hammer may not be a drop in fit, and the existing hammer has been fitted to the frame and trigger at the factory. My question is, why not just leave it as is? Its probably a fantastic shooter as is. I have many DAO revolvers and I shoot and enjoy them as is.

I would think twice (at least) about having a new hammer installed. I would bet that that old sheriff's gun has a pretty smooth double action pull by now, all those years of qualifying, etc., serving to give the gun a better action job than a gunsmith could. The new hammer is going to give you a factory-new gritty double action pull.

I will dance along the fence here. It is your gun, do with it what you please. Though, leaving the gun 'as is' does give it a certain character.

Along that line of thinking, a buddy recently returned a 1911 to a well known pistol smith for some sight work. The smith informed him that the staked front sight would be replaced and a dovetailed one installed. My buddy agreed but told him just to cold blue the area where the work was being done. Despite this, the smith did a beautiful refinish of the entire slide. My buddy was actually quite upset. All of the little dings and scratches were from genuine duty use of the pistol, hard earned and gave the gun character.

I have a model 15 from a LAPD officer that is also dao and was going to replace the hammer because I like to shoot single action sometimes for the more precision accuracy obtained by these great guns...was going to keep the original hammer so I could switch it back if desired later but recently came across another m15 which was not modified, and added it to the stable :-> best of both worlds for me now...the LAPD gun stayed as it was....

I thank everyone for the replies, at first I thought it was broken, I've shot it and it is very accurate and smooth. I'm surprise I was able to shoot it double action that well, I think it will stay as is.

I bought one of the J&G's model 64s that is DAO and after shooting it I decided to leave it as is. It is smooth as silk and I shoot it very well. It is the best trigger of all my revolvers.

If you put it up for a vote if you should change the hammer or not, I vote against it.

The M10 with its fixed sights is not 25 yard target gun and generally has excellent double action trigger characterisitics, good enough for general shooting.
